I have always loved and had a soft spot for s4 because that's when I first started watching & I love the tone, the themes, the distinct episodes..I missed all the high school years when they originally aired but that was so fun going back to see where it began. s1 is unfairly maligned. I wish they added more episodes to s1 through the animated series. s7 aged well, get's better with time imo even though it has some major flaws.

It's interesting though that at the end of s6 you thought they were building Spike up to be the big bad of s7 when they actually went the complete opposite way and you (along with most) didn't see it coming. And this route is so much more interesting on every level than if Spike just got his chip out and went back to being a pure villain like in s2. I love that the Buffyverse isn't afraid to evolve the characters dramatically. the last scene in 'beneath you' really is top tier like you described

2025-11-17 06:03:50 +0000 UTCAbsolutely amazing performance by James. His monologue was very different and kind of cheesy as originally scripted and filmed, and Whedon hated it. He rewrote the scene and directed it while the rest of the crew was working on another episode.
