Girl Cave poster - making of

This is for a German Webseries called Girl Cave. It's about three geeky girls who are friends.

The creator, Memofilm, contacted me to create a pixelart poster for one of the episodes. Here is my process from beginning to end:

I started with the concept, the girls are contemplating robbing a bank. So, some comedy/ cartoonish-ness was called for. Dexter's Lab, Kim Possible, Spy Kids, that sort of thing. I then collected reference pics of those for a good hour to get inspired.

I explored 260x260px first, finished a sketch and color test. It had to be a square canvas, because the poster is for posting on Instagram and Twitter. Square canvases are sometimes hard to work with, composition-wise and whatnot, but three figures usually look good when you place the tallest of the three between the other two.

Then I decided to go half that, 130x130px, in order to showcase individual pixels. I downsized in half and then started cleaning everything up.
