Under the Cursed Moon - CH - 41

As the three vampires sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean, the tension among them was palpable. The salty breeze whipped through their hair, but it did little to ease the rising tension in their minds.

James, his eyes gleaming with excitement and a hint of obsession, turned to Victoria. "You know, if I take care of that creature, if I kill it before it grows... think of the reward the Volturi will give me," he said, his voice almost dripping with ambition. "A creature that dangerous to our own kind? They’ll be offering me gifts beyond imagination. I could have anything I want—status, power, maybe even my own territory. All I have to do is destroy it. It's only a matter of time before it becomes a threat, and I’ll be the one to take care of it."

Victoria, her red eyes narrowed as she considered James' words, did not respond immediately. She had heard James talk about his obsession with power before, but something about the way he spoke now made her uneasy. Still, her thirst for revenge on the Cullens—especially for what they had done to her old coven—was strong enough to push her doubts aside.

Laurent, who had been silently listening to their conversation, finally spoke up, his voice laced with concern. "I’m not so sure this is a good idea, James. The father of that... thing… he’s not far behind, and I don’t think we can take him on. I’ve seen what the child can do." Laurent’s eyes flicked nervously to the horizon, as if he could already feel the danger closing in. "We don’t know what we’re dealing with here. We don’t know the full extent of this creature's powers, or what its family is capable of."

James turned to Laurent with a look of annoyance. "You're scared. I get it. But you’re thinking too small. What we’re up against isn’t vampire. We’ve dealt with the vampires before, we know how they fight. And they’ll be distracted with the child. That gives us the perfect opportunity."

Laurent shook his head, the unease in his expression growing. "You’re underestimating them. The Cullens are no ordinary vampires. If you go after the kid, you’re not just dealing with the Cullens anymore. You're bringing the whole family down on us. And I’m not sure we can handle that."

James’ eyes flashed with irritation. "Are you going to back out now, Laurent? We’ve come this far. You’ve already helped us so far, and you’ve seen the way the vampire system work. I can’t let this opportunity slip through my fingers."

Laurent stood up slowly, his gaze distant as he stared out at the ocean. "I’m not backing out, James. But I’m not getting involved in something that’s going to get me killed either. I’m done with this."

Victoria, sensing the rift forming between the two of them, stepped in quickly, her voice sharp. "James, Laurent’s right. If we go after that child, it’s not just about killing it anymore. We’ll be inviting the Cullens to hunt us down."

James growled, frustrated, but the reality of Laurent and Victoria’s warnings began to sink in. He knew they had a point, but his thirst for power and revenge made it hard to let go of the idea. Finally, after a long pause, he stood up from his perch on the cliff, his eyes narrowing as he gazed out at the sea. "Then we wait. We bide our time. But I’ll be watching. And when the time is right, when we have an advantage... I’ll make my move."

Laurent, relieved to have avoided immediate confrontation, nodded slowly. "I’ll leave you to it, James. But I’m not going to risk my life for this."

With that, Laurent turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving James and Victoria alone. James watched him go with a mix of irritation and calculation, already planning his next move.

Victoria, meanwhile, remained at James’ side, her gaze flicking between him and the retreating Laurent. "Are you sure this is the right call?" she asked, her voice low, but filled with concern.

James didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he simply stared out at the ocean, his mind already racing through strategies and possibilities. Finally, after a moment, he spoke, his voice hardening. "I’m sure. The Volturi will want the child dead. If I do this, I’ll have power—more than I ever dreamed of. And nothing is going to stop me."

Edward's mind raced as he sat in the quiet of the Cullen family home. He had heard the thoughts of James, clearer than ever before. James was a predator in every sense of the word, and Edward knew all too well how dangerous he could be. He could feel his muscles tense, his thoughts flashing as he pieced together the vicious plan James had in mind.

At first, James had fixated on Bella. Edward had always known that James harbored a dangerous obsession with hurting others, driven by jealousy and hatred. The tracker’s twisted desire to torment and kill Bella had been clear from the start, but now, with Teddy involved, everything had escalated. James no longer cared about Bella’s life. The real prize, the real target, was Teddy. Edward felt his chest tighten as he thought of the danger Teddy was now in.

James' sadistic nature had always been evident. He enjoyed the hunt, the chase, and the terror that followed in his wake. But now, with Teddy caught in his sights, the hunt had become personal for James. He had learned to appreciate the fact that Teddy was no ordinary child. Edward heard James' twisted thoughts—how he longed to see the creature's abilities, how he was fascinated by its potential, but above all, how he wanted to break it. Kill it. He could sense James' desire to inflict pain, to make Teddy suffer before he ended his life.

What James didn’t realize, though, was that Teddy was not someone to be underestimated. He wasn’t a helpless child, not like the others James had hunted in the past. Teddy's power, whatever it was, had already begun to reveal itself in small but significant ways. That alone made him a much greater threat than James could comprehend. And Edward, knowing that Teddy had something beyond even their understanding, felt a deep sense of protectiveness surge within him.

But it wasn’t just the child’s powers that had shifted James' focus. It was the Cullens’ protection over Teddy that had pushed James to make him his next target. Edward could hear the thoughts of James' increasing frustration at the fact that the Cullens, especially every one of them, were fiercely protective of the boy.

The tension in the Cullen household was palpable as they regrouped after another fruitless chase. James and Victoria had been spotted lingering on the fringes of their territory, carefully testing boundaries, but every time the Cullens got close enough to confront them, the rogue vampires managed to slip away. It was a maddening game of cat and mouse, and it was clear that James and Victoria were playing for time—or waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

Edward slammed his fist onto the heavy oak table in frustration. "They’re toying with us," he said, his voice low but sharp. "James knows we’re protecting Teddy, and he’s deliberately drawing us out."

Carlisle placed a calming hand on Edward’s shoulder. "We must remain vigilant. Losing our composure will only give them the advantage."

Esme, ever the nurturing figure, added softly, "We’re doing everything we can, but we mustn’t let our frustration cloud our judgment. We need to focus on keeping Teddy safe."

Alice, her brow furrowed in concentration, had been quiet, scanning the future for any clues. "James and Victoria are working together, but they’re keeping their plans deliberately unclear. Every time I think I’ve found something solid, the vision changes."

"That’s because they’re constantly changing plans," Jasper said, pacing the room. "They’re not staying in one place long enough for us to corner them. It’s a strategy to wear us down."

Rosalie crossed her arms, her golden eyes flashing with anger. "And it’s working. We’ve been running ourselves ragged, and they’re still out there."

Emmett, ever eager for a fight, growled, "Next time we see them, we don’t hesitate. We go in full force."

Despite their frustration, there was another problem weighing on their minds: the third vampire. Laurent had vanished after their initial encounter, and no one had seen or sensed him since. It was possible he had left the area entirely, but the Cullens couldn't afford to assume anything. His absence could mean he was waiting for an opportune moment to reappear—or worse, that he had his own plans that could endanger them further.

"What about Laurent?" Rosalie asked. "Do we think he’s really gone, or is he just lying low?"

Edward shook his head. "I can’t be sure. His thoughts were conflicted when we last encountered him. He seemed reluctant to be involved, but that doesn’t mean he won’t return if James or Victoria call on him."

Jasper added, "We should operate under the assumption that he’s still out there. Complacency will only make us vulnerable."

The Cullens knew they couldn’t let their guard down, not even for a moment. They had to be ready for anything. With James and Victoria still on the loose and Laurent’s whereabouts unknown, the threat was far from over.

James and Victoria, determined to find a way to reach their target, decided to take a risky detour through the Native American land, hoping the Cullens wouldn’t dare follow them there. They knew the Quileute territory was home to shapeshifters—giant wolves with a deep-seated animosity toward vampires. But their desperation to corner the creature outweighed their caution.

As they crossed into the dense forests of the Quileute land, their confidence began to wane. The air was thick with the scent of wolves, and it wasn’t long before they heard the low, guttural growls echoing through the trees. James halted, his predatory instincts flaring.

“They know we’re here,” he said, scanning the dark forest.

Victoria, her crimson hair blending with the fiery hues of the setting sun, hissed, “We keep moving. They can’t protect that child forever.”

But before they could take another step, the wolves emerged. Massive and imposing, their eyes glowed with fury. Leading the pack was Jacob Black, his russet-colored fur bristling as he let out a warning growl. The other wolves fanned out, cutting off any chance of escape.

James sneered but didn’t dare attack. “Well, isn’t this interesting,” he muttered. “A welcoming committee.”

The wolves didn’t wait for pleasantries. They charged, forcing James and Victoria to flee deeper into the forest. The vampires’ supernatural speed gave them an advantage, but the wolves were relentless, nipping at their heels and driving them toward the boundary of Quileute land.

After what felt like an eternity, James and Victoria managed to escape the wolves’ immediate pursuit, retreating to the edge of the forest. They stood on a rocky outcrop, panting and furious.

“This isn’t over,” James snarled, his red eyes blazing. “That creature and its protectors will pay for this.”

Victoria nodded, her eyes glinting with determination. “But not today. We need a new plan.”

Meanwhile, Jacob, having ensured the rogue vampires were driven off, shifted back into human form and immediately went to the Cullens’ house. His face was a mask of concern as he approached their door, ignoring the usual tension between their kinds.

Edward opened the door, already aware of Jacob’s thoughts. “You ran into them.”

Jacob nodded grimly. “Two vampires. A male and a female. They were trying to cut through our land. We chased them off, but they’ll be back.”

Carlisle stepped forward, his expression grave. “Thank you for coming, Jacob. We’ve been tracking them, but they’re proving difficult to pin down.”

Ok, but seriously call Harry! It’s his child. Even if everything goes right and nothing happens to Teddy, Harry will still be very VERY pissed at them for not informing him.
