He wasn’t expecting much; he never did. His small circle of friends had grown slightly since he became a Chunin last year, but he wasn’t one to seek attention or large gatherings. Still, today felt... different.
In the kitchen, Naruto was buzzing with energy, his sleeves rolled up and his face scrunched in deep concentration. He was determined to prepare his secret recipe for Itachi’s birthday dinner, shooing away anyone who tried to help—including Teuchi and Ayame, who had arrived early, eager to lend a hand.
“Naruto, let me at least check the seasoning,” Teuchi pleaded, peering over the counter.
“No way, old man!” Naruto snapped, waving a wooden spoon at him. “I told you, it’s gonna be a surprise! It’s my special recipe for Itachi-niisan!”
Ayame giggled as she set some ingredients aside. “You’re so stubborn, Naruto. Itachi’s lucky to have you.”
Naruto puffed out his chest proudly. “Of course he is! I worked really hard on this dish. It’s gotta be perfect!”
Meanwhile, Mikoto was moving through the house with practiced grace, arranging decorations, setting the table, and making sure everything was perfect. Despite Itachi’s quiet nature, she knew how important it was to celebrate moments like these. Her heart swelled with pride knowing how far her son had come.
The doorbell rang, and Mikoto greeted the first wave of guests with a warm smile.
Itachi’s teammates arrived first, a little awkward but carrying small gifts. Shisui Uchiha, his closest friend, was the first to enter, his easygoing smile lighting up the room.
“Happy birthday, Itachi!” Shisui grinned, patting him on the back. “Nine already? You’re gonna catch up to me soon!”
Itachi chuckled softly. “Thanks, Shisui. I appreciate you coming.”
Behind Shisui, other shinobi started filtering in—familiar faces from Itachi’s missions and training. As a Chunin, his world had expanded beyond the academy, and he had made a few new acquaintances. Each one expressed admiration for his skills and work ethic, and Itachi felt a little overwhelmed by the growing crowd.
Even some of Konoha’s respected Jonin had come, including Kurenai Yuhi and Asuma Sarutobi, who had worked alongside Itachi on a few missions. They greeted him warmly, eager to enjoy Mikoto’s legendary home-cooked meal.
“Didn’t know you had such a big family, Itachi,” Asuma said with a grin as he glanced at the bustling home.
Itachi shook his head. “It’s not as big as it looks, but everyone here is important.”
Back in the kitchen, Naruto was putting the final touches on his dish, his face glowing with excitement. He peeked out of the kitchen and saw the room filled with shinobi and familiar faces, and suddenly felt nervous.
“Alright, I got this. No pressure,” he muttered to himself, taking a deep breath.
Finally, he carried out the covered dish and set it down in front of Itachi. “Ta-da! Happy birthday, Itachi-niisan!”
Itachi’s lips twitched into a small smile as he looked at Naruto’s proud expression. “Thank you, Naruto. What is it?”
Naruto grinned mischievously. “You’ll see!” He pulled the cover off with a flourish, revealing a perfectly cooked mushroom stir-fry, the aroma filling the room instantly.
Teuchi whistled. “Not bad, kid. Looks like you really pulled it off.”
Itachi took a bite, chewing thoughtfully before his eyes widened slightly. “This… is incredible, Naruto.”
Naruto beamed. “Really?! I mean, of course it is! I worked super hard on it!”
Everyone applauded Naruto’s effort, and Mikoto ruffled his hair affectionately. “You did great, Naruto. Thank you for making Itachi’s day special.”
The warm aroma of Naruto’s mushroom stir-fry wafted through the air, drawing everyone to the table. The dish had become an instant hit, with guests eagerly asking for seconds.
“This is incredible, Naruto!” Shisui exclaimed, wolfing down his second serving. “Who knew you could cook like this?”
Naruto crossed his arms proudly, his cheeks turning red at the praise. “Of course! I worked super hard on it!”
Teuchi chuckled from the side. “Looks like I might have some competition in the ramen business.”
Naruto, however, remained stubborn about sharing. “Itachi-niisan gets first dibs! It’s his birthday!”
Despite Naruto’s protests, Itachi, with his ever-calm demeanor, insisted on sharing. “It’s okay, Naruto. Good food is meant to be shared.” He passed plates around the room, ensuring everyone got a taste.
The praise continued to pour in, and Naruto beamed with pride, blushing every time someone complimented his cooking skills.
Mikoto stood nearby, watching with a tender smile. Seeing Naruto and Itachi so happy filled her heart with warmth she hadn’t felt in a long time. But the highlight of the evening came when the front door creaked open, and an unexpected figure stepped inside.
Mikoto turned to see an elderly man dressed in traditional Uchiha robes, his posture still strong despite his age. It was Takashi Uchiha, her father and the former head of the Uchiha clan.
The room fell into a momentary silence as all eyes turned toward him. Itachi, who had never truly interacted with his grandfather beyond fleeting moments, straightened up in surprise.
Mikoto’s eyes widened, but then a gentle smile spread across her face. Without hesitation, she stepped forward and embraced her father warmly. “Father,” she said softly, her voice laced with emotions. “You came.”
Takashi’s expression was unreadable at first, but then he softened, resting his hand gently on her back. “I did,” he said, his voice quieter than usual. “I hope I’m not intruding.”
“You’re always welcome,” Mikoto assured him, guiding him into the house. The warmth of the gathering slowly resumed, and soon, the former clan head was seated comfortably among the guests.
As the day continued, Mikoto and her father found themselves sitting together in a quiet corner of the room, away from the crowd.
“I didn’t expect you to come,” Mikoto admitted, sipping her tea. “It’s been… a long time.”
Takashi sighed, his eyes filled with a mixture of regret and longing. “I should have come sooner, Mikoto. I realize now that I made a mistake all those years ago.” He hesitated, then continued, “I was too proud… too stubborn to see what I was losing.”
Mikoto’s expression softened, and she placed a hand over his. “We all make mistakes, Father. What matters is that you’re here now.”
Takashi nodded, his voice heavy with emotion. “I want to make things right. I may have given up my title, but… I haven’t given up on you. I miss you, and I miss the time I could have spent with my grandson.”
Mikoto squeezed his hand gently, tears glistening in her eyes. “Then stay. Be part of Itachi’s life. He’s an incredible boy, and he still has much to learn.”
Takashi smiled, his heart swelling with pride as he looked across the room at Itachi, who was surrounded by his friends and comrades, his calm yet strong presence undeniable.
Eventually, Takashi stood up and approached Itachi, who was busy speaking with Shisui and a few other guests. The young Uchiha looked up when he noticed his grandfather standing there, and a rare moment of uncertainty flickered in his emerald-green eyes.
“Grandfather,” Itachi greeted politely, standing up and bowing slightly.
Takashi studied his grandson for a moment before nodding in approval. “You’ve grown into a fine young man, Itachi.”
Itachi blinked, slightly surprised at the genuine praise. “Thank you.”
Takashi hesitated before speaking again. “I regret not being more present in your life. But if you’ll allow it, I’d like to change that.”
Itachi considered the words carefully, then gave a small nod. “I’d like that too.”
The simple exchange meant more to Itachi than he realized. It was the first time he had ever spoken with his grandfather in such a personal way, and for the first time, he felt a sense of belonging that had been absent for so long.
As the celebration continued, Takashi sat beside Mikoto, and they both watched Itachi and Naruto as they laughed and enjoyed themselves. The rift that once existed within their family seemed smaller now, and Mikoto silently hoped that tonight would be the first step toward healing.
When it was finally time for the guests to leave, Takashi lingered a little longer. Before stepping out, he turned to Mikoto and said, “Thank you for welcoming me back.”
Mikoto smiled. “We’re family, Father. There’s always a place for you here.”
As Mikoto closed the door behind the last guest, Naruto plopped down on the couch with a triumphant grin.
“Itachi-niisan, did you see? Everyone loved my stir-fry!”
Itachi chuckled, patting Naruto’s head. “You did well, Naruto. Thank you.”
Mikoto sat beside them, placing an arm around both boys. “Tonight was a success,” she said, looking at Itachi warmly. “Happy birthday, sweetheart.”
Itachi looked around at his family—his mother, Naruto, and the lingering warmth of his grandfather’s visit—and for the first time in a long while, he felt that his birthday had truly been special.
“Thank you, Mother. Thank you, Naruto.”
As the last guest left and the warmth of the birthday celebration lingered in the air, Naruto suddenly gasped, his eyes widening with realization.
“Oh no! I forgot!” he exclaimed, slapping his forehead dramatically.
Itachi, Mikoto, and Takashi turned to look at him in confusion. “Forgot what, Naruto?” Mikoto asked with a soft smile, amused by his antics.
Naruto grinned sheepishly and dug into his jacket, pulling out a carefully rolled-up scroll with the word Crow written boldly across it. “I have one more gift for you, Itachi-niisan!”
Takashi, who had decided to stay the night with his daughter and grandson, observed with quiet interest as Itachi took the scroll from Naruto’s outstretched hands.
Curious, Itachi carefully unrolled the scroll, his eyes widening in shock as he took in the elegant calligraphy and the unmistakable markings of a summoning contract.
The room fell silent for a moment.
“A summoning contract,” Itachi whispered, his voice filled with awe. “Naruto… where did you get this?”
Naruto scratched the back of his head nervously and puffed up his chest. “Uh… that’s a secret! I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone!”
Mikoto and Itachi exchanged glances, recognizing the stubborn gleam in Naruto’s eyes. They knew Naruto well enough to understand that when he made a promise, he wouldn’t break it, no matter what.
Takashi chuckled. “A summoning contract is worth more than mountains of gold, Naruto. You really don’t know what you’re holding here, do you?”
Naruto blinked, confused. “Eh? Is it really that special?”
Itachi nodded, his fingers tracing the intricate symbols. “It is. Summoning contracts are extremely rare and powerful. They allow a shinobi to form a bond with a clan of animals, gaining their assistance in battle and reconnaissance. For one to be given as a gift…” he trailed off, still stunned.
“Well, go on then!” Naruto urged, bouncing in excitement. “Sign it, Itachi-niisan!”
With a deep breath, Itachi bit his thumb, drawing a small bead of blood. He carefully pressed it against the contract, signing his name in bold strokes. The contract pulsed with energy the moment his signature was complete, and a small smirk played at the corner of his lips.
“Let’s see what this is all about,” he said, standing up and walking toward the open garden outside.
Mikoto, Naruto, and Takashi followed eagerly, anticipation buzzing in the air.
Itachi unfurled the scroll on the ground and formed the hand seals with practiced ease.
“Kuchiyose no Jutsu!” he called out, slamming his palm onto the earth.
A burst of chakra surged into the scroll, and in an instant, a massive plume of smoke erupted, swirling dramatically before dissipating to reveal an enormous black crow with gleaming red eyes. Its wingspan was vast, and its feathers shimmered like obsidian in the moonlight. The crow was so large that twenty people could easily ride on its back.
Naruto’s jaw dropped. “Whoa! It’s HUGE!”
Takashi, too, was visibly impressed, his eyes wide with admiration. “Incredible… this is no ordinary summon.”
The massive crow cocked its head, eyeing Itachi with an appraising look. “Hmmm… so you’re the new summoner?” the crow’s deep voice echoed in the night air.
Itachi bowed slightly in respect. “I am Uchiha Itachi. It is an honor to be your summoner.”
The crow let out a low chuckle. “Honor, huh? Call me whenever you require our strength, Itachi.”
Naruto, still awestruck, pointed at the crow excitedly. “Hey, big bird! Can Itachi-niisan ride on you?”
The crow snorted. “Hmph. Of course.”
Itachi nodded. “I will call upon you when I need your assistance. Thank you.”
The crow gave a sharp nod before vanishing in a puff of smoke. The atmosphere settled, and everyone turned to look at Itachi with a mixture of awe and excitement.
“That… was so cool!” Naruto cheered, jumping up and down. “I wish I had a summoning like that!”
Mikoto smiled proudly at Itachi, placing a hand on his shoulder. “That was amazing, Itachi. You’ve truly grown into a strong shinobi.”
Takashi nodded in agreement. “I never expected to witness a summon of such caliber tonight. Whoever gave Naruto this contract must have seen great potential in you.”
Itachi looked down at the scroll thoughtfully. He had an inkling of who might have been behind this gift, but he remained silent. If what he suspected was true, then Naruto’s mysterious benefactor was someone far beyond his understanding.
As they all returned inside, Naruto whispered to Itachi, “So… do you like the gift?”
Itachi smiled genuinely, ruffling Naruto’s hair. “I love it, Naruto. Thank you.”
Naruto grinned from ear to ear. “Told you it was special!”
