On rewatch I think I like this episode quite a bit more now than when I watched it on release night. We finally get some emotional stakes from Marshall which was very welcome as until now he'd sort of been a prop in Gary's story and as much as I like Gary (less so this season than last) his story is just not super interesting. I'm very much looking forward to diving into the Marshall/Simone story as Marceline and Simon are one of my absolute favourite parts of Adventure time. re:Gary's Parents They aren't actually Gumbald and Lolly. I would have literally never guessed who they were supposed to represent either until Tom Herpich revealed who they were on social media. Apparently they're supposed to be two of the old banana guards that appeared in AT Season 7 Episode 1 "Bonnie & Neddy." The book Cake was reading is another reference to how her story arc is probably gonna go. Of Human Bondage is a 1915 bildungsroman novel by W. Somerset Maugham where the semi-autobiographical protagonist goes through life searching for happiness in various pursuits, both romantic and not, never quite achieving his happiness. At the end of the novel he settles down and marries a woman who likes him instead of continuing on his travels as he had planned. He stops searching for his happiness and decides to be content with his lot in life finding that the simple story of birth, work, marriage, children and death is the most perfect one. Cake is searching for happiness only in humanity and refusing to acknowledge that she's still a cat by nature (a sentient and sapient one -- but a cat nonetheless). By the end of the season she'll stop trying to be something that she's not and be content with what she actually is.
