Chapter 72: First Contact Firestorm

The stars were no longer just distant lights. They were paths waiting to be walked, and the Imperium had begun marching.

It had only been a week since the Emperor launched the grand crusade, and already the first conquest was done. The target was a gray, hostile planet filled with jagged mountains and dark skies. It wasn't empty though. Not completely. Once, it had been ruled by a race of xenos. Tall insectoid creatures with sharp chitin armor and claws like blades. But now, they were mostly gone.

The Astartes had purged them in fire and fury. Only a few scattered monsters still roamed the wild forests and crags, hiding in shadows. Most of the hives were gone, burned or crushed by orbital bombardment.

The world was now human.

The Emperor ordered a Tesseract Gate to be placed there, connecting it directly to Terra. The gate shimmered blue and white, humming with power drawn from the Space Stone—the heart of its energy source. Machines and servitors worked day and night, mining the world’s rich minerals. It had officially been labeled as Terra's first mining colony.

But conquest didn’t stop there.

The Emperor, in his brilliance, issued another order.

“Activate a second gate,” he said, voice calm but absolute. “Open it into the unknown. Let the galaxy know we are coming.”

The command was followed. Engineers and psykers, guided by ancient Terran science and the energy of the Tesseract, opened another gate. This time it wasn’t anchored. It twisted reality and linked to a random point across the universe.

They didn’t know what would be on the other side.

But they opened it anyway.

The moment the gate flared to life, alarms screamed.

A fleet was on the other side. Dozens of alien ships. Blue and silver. Sleek and sharp. Like giant blades moving through the stars.

They were Kree.

The alien ships began moving fast. One of them broke away and hovered close to the gate, scanning the energy.

Inside the bridge of the Spear of Terra, Horus watched with arms crossed. His warship floated in orbit above the mining world, guarding the new gate like a silent predator.

“Who are they?” he asked, voice low.

“No known record,” replied his officer. “Signal intercepted… translating now.”

A screen blinked to life. A Kree commander appeared. Pale blue skin. Cold eyes. Armor glowing with energy.

“Unknown lesser beings fleet,” the Kree said, sharp and direct. “You have opened an unauthorized breach into Kree territory. Close it immediately, or we will destroy you.”

Horus didn’t flinch.

He stepped forward and spoke.

“You speak of territory. But this galaxy belongs to mankind now.”

The transmission ended.

Moments later, plasma fire erupted from the Kree ships.

Space exploded in blue lightning and fire.

Horus gave one command.

“Unleash the fleet.”

Across the system, ships of the Imperium activated weapons. Lance batteries opened fire. Torpedoes screamed through the void. The Spear of Terra led the charge, its main cannon blowing apart the first Kree frigate with one perfect shot.

From the mining world, defense batteries fired toward the gate. Dropships launched. Astartes squads boarded Thunderhawks and drop pods.

Inside one pod, Sergeant Kael checked his bolter. His squad stood ready.

“They’re not just testing us,” Kael said. “They’re trying to scare us.”

“Doesn’t matter,” another Astartes said, slamming his fist to his chest. “We’re Astartes. We don’t scare.”

The pod launched. It tore through the atmosphere and flew straight toward a Kree cruiser.

Inside the cruiser, Kree soldiers moved quickly, setting up plasma weapons and defense lines. They had fought many enemies before.

But they had never fought Space Marines.

The pod crashed into their hull, ripping a hole in the wall. Astartes poured out, guns blazing.

Kael was the first in.

He charged forward, slammed his fist into a Kree soldier’s face, and shattered his skull. Bolter fire tore through metal and bone. Grenades lit the hallways in fire. Screams echoed through the ship.

Kael roared, “FOR TERRA!”

Back in space, the battle was chaos. The Imperium fleet was smaller, but more precise. Each strike was like a blade. One by one, Kree ships fell. Explosions lit up the darkness.

The gate held steady.

Suddenly, one Kree ship turned toward the mining world. It began firing on the surface, aiming for the Tesseract Gate.

Horus snarled.

“All ships, protect that world! I want that Kree ship destroyed now!”

A formation of interceptors broke formation and sped toward the enemy ship. Missiles locked on. Las-fire burned trails through space.

The Kree ship tried to escape, but it was too late. A missile barrage tore through its engines. The ship broke apart in a flash of blue flame.

Silence returned.

Only wreckage floated through space.

The battle was won.

Inside the bridge, Horus watched the debris drift across the stars. He walked to the comms station.

“Send word to Terra,” he said. “First contact with alien empire complete. Alien Kree forces defeated. Gate secured.”

He turned to look at the stars beyond the gate.

“This was only the beginning.”
