Tim McGraw was her first single ever, and was a clever creative decision to tie herself to a (at the time) much more famous country start, but she absolutely wouldn't have been able to get him on the song as her first ever major label song (it's kinda funny, when you go back to shows where he plays as a guest and they sing it, he doesn't know the lyrics lmao)

I wrote songs at that age, too… And I tell you what, they were not this good. She wrote “Tied Together with a Smile” about a girl at her school who had an eating disorder. She came up with “Tim McGraw” in freshman year math class. Liz Rose, her cowriter on most of these early songs, has said in interviews that she acted more as an editor than a writer on Taylor’s songs (unlike on other songs she cowrote for).
