2023-12-29 18:58:26 +0000 UTCRuby and Sapphire were particularly poor choices, but I think that any gem would probably have been a bad choice for getting feedback on the idea of proposing marriage at age 16. I mean, the gems are functionally born adults; I don't know if "you're way too young for that!" -- which would surely be the natural response from an adult human in Steven's culture -- would be a thought that would come naturally to a gem. This is really where the series gets good, IMO. There's a weirdly subversive quality to it as well that I find a bit thrilling. It seems to me that it's an underlying assumption of child hero stories that their heroes are never going to react to the constant stress and trauma of their stories like a real child would. Steven's reactions aren't realistic in one sense, of course -- I mean, he glows and has magic powers! -- but there's still something pleasingly jarring to me about the show breaking such a fundamental yet unspoken rule of its own genre. (BTW, I know this is not your fault, but this software's refusal to recognize "Return" as a line break, instead sending the message to post, is really hard on fast typists. I sincerely hope you guys aren't being bothered by a new update every time I have to edit because I once more accidentally sent too early!)
