He grew up in the shadow of his siblings (mainly his brothers) and, being Harry Potter's best friend, ends up in his shadow. In the first film, he sees himself in the Mirror of Erised as head boy and Quidditch captain covered in glory. He is envious of the chance to compete for riches and glory, and the idea that Harry may not have put his name in the Goblet of Fire doesn't even cross his mind because he is so blinded by envy. That's why he's such an ass to Harry in the first part of the film.
