Weekly Update 6/23/19

Wrapping up the first year of the 70's with the departure of Jack Kirby, inarguably one of the most influential figures in superhero comics. His work defined the look of Marvel comics for a decade and the characters he designed are still some of the most popular and recognizable in the world. His bright, colorful, intricately detailed machinery, costumes, and cities are some of the absolute best aspects of a Silver Age read.

Acknowledging all that, there is a part of me that feels glad he's moving on from Marvel. With the explosion of new writers, artists, and series, Kirby's work is being to seem stale in comparison, somewhat stuck in old formats when so many artists are beginning to become more experimental with their storytelling. I know we're going to see him again later in the 70's, but I'm glad he left now before his issues really began to feel antiquated.
