Fusil De Chasse - The Firearm of the American Revolutionary Militia

The lore of the American militia man and his rifle, while not incorrect, is exaggerated. The vast majority of the American revolutionary militia were armed with common smoothbore hunting flintlocks, with the majority of those being the French "fusil de chasse". "Fusil de chasse" translates roughly to "gun of the hunt" and is still a French term today used for "shotgun".

The "Settlers" of the time, be they Spanish, French, or from the various British dominated areas, generally were in "The New World" to Escape the Old. Money was Short, So "Inexpensive" was important. Military Surplus was the Key. As the Worlds Militaries Upgraded, Like Today. Previously used arms were fairly abundant, Unless there was a War On. In fact the Countries needing Colonists to Increase and Protect It's Territories, would make them available to the Militias for Self Protection. That they could be Dual Use made it even better.

It was used up to the civil war, as they stated it wasn't as accurate. It also takes additional time to load them into the rifle.

Matthew Berndt

Harder recoil, lesser accuracy, I think.

Are there any downsides to buck-&-ball, besides the obvious cost of extra projectiles and extra time to load? It feels like I would've heard more of it being used if it had nothing but benefits :)

Shouldn't that be "fusil _du_ chasse?" [My old French instructor is probably face-palming right now. Dear Max, I know I disappointed you! What a great teacher, the failure here lies solely upon your sorry student's shoulders... 😄]

Would be interesting to chrono the muzzle velocipede of these black powder guns and bullet/shot weight, just to get some idea of their power.
