Chapter 183 – Rift

The holy knight order roared triumphantly after crushing the first  wave of the allied army using guns and grenades from the defense wall.

It was a tactical victory that had denied to them for so long.

「There is nothing to fear from god’s enemy as long as we have the holy relics with us!」

「This Soldividian is infallible!」

Certainly it might be just like they said if the enemy kept attacking  with only simple head-on charge, but Baldr was still keeping the covert  cat-eared race in reserve, and he also wasn’t using bombardment from  the sky.

The method of bombing from balloon had also been reported to the  church, but it couldn’t be helped that they were reacting like this  because they wouldn’t be able to actually consider it for real unless  they had experienced it themselves.

Besides those weren’t the only trump cards that Baldr had prepared.

「Prepare for the special combat.」

The first wave withdrew together with the wounded. The royal guards  that were being led by Brooks were dispatched to the frontline.

They all were wearing goggle and mask. They looked like a strange group from a glance.

「Failure is not allowed for us the royal guards!」

The royal guards were standing in well-organized lines and saluted  simultaneously under Brooks’ command. As expected from the elites, their  proficiency could be felt from their perfectly coordinated movements.

And then tear gas and flash grenade were thrown one after another.

The tear gas’s main ingredient was capsaicin that was extracted from  pepper and the like. It was far less potent than the modern tear gas but  it wasn’t that difficult to make.

The flash grenade too was created by boiling sea water to obtain  concentrated solution of salts. Performing electrolysis on it created  magnesium.

This magnesium would unleash intense light when it was put into vessel of oxygen and ignited.

Unfortunately its effect was closer to a flare rather than the modern flash grenade.

The church finally had things going well for them thanks to the guns  and explosives in their possession, but they were completely defenseless  against these unexpected weapons.

There were some people who threw their grenade to at least deal a hit  to the enemy, but half of them only hit their own allies because they  were throwing while their eyes were blinded.

In a condition where the eye couldn’t see, even a trained soldier  would find it difficult to take out a grenade from their pouch and throw  it properly.

Of course half of the recklessly thrown grenades also hit Brooks’ royal guards that were advancing.

There was no way the enemy magicians could cast magic cancel accurately under this chaotic situation.

Originally magic cancel should be easy to perform, but here the  church’s army couldn’t even do such thing. The effective counterattack  from the enemy instantly broke their battle formation.

It wasn’t like they managed to block all the bullets and grenades  with only magic. The knights of the church were also including veteran  soldiers who were good in fighting.

However at the very least this counterattack broke the stalemate. The  balance of the battle had tilted greatly toward the allied army.

「Press forward. Gunners, open fire.」

Baldr immediately dispatched the second wave in order to magnify the chaos at the frontline even more.

The gunner unit barraged the enemy force without fearing that they would accidentally shoot their ally.

The church’s force had formed a solid defensive formation, but most  of the people that made up the formation were sadly just amateur and it  showed.

They were falling far behind in their reaction against the allied army’s attack.

There was a wall that couldn’t be overcome no matter what with only high morale that was based on faith.

That had been proven by the demon king of the sixth heaven Oda  Nobunaga when he smashed and exterminated Ikkou Ikki (Jodo Shinshu  Buddhist uprising).

「Cursed heretics! You won’t pass through here alive!」

「I won’t let you through even if it cost me my life!」

The soldiers who were unable to see started charging suicidally toward the direction of the voice they heard.

Doing that didn’t bring much result but, this was where religious  militia became really troublesome, by dealing small damages with  certainty to their opponent regardless of how thoroughly outclassed they  were.

A professional in their place wouldn’t do such pointless thing when  the result had been determined like this. They would simply escape or  surrender.

That was because they knew that fighting to the death was inefficient.

But believers who fought for their faith would never do that.

Concept like kill ratio was completely outside their consideration.

――Although even this insane response from them had also been within Baldr’s prediction.

Satsuki’s expression burst into delight and she ran off.

Baldr’s objective wasn’t to bring down Soldividian, but securing the  sealing orb. Exterminating the church’s force was nothing more than a  step to achieve that.
