"Amends" REACTION - Buffy 3x10 Commentary (Early Access YouTube)

I guess it depends which definition you are going with but being born the same year as Buffy, 1981, I consider myself the eldest of Millenials as well as a Xennial but we have a lot in common with Gen X regardless.

I would love to chat about Buffy on so many topics. I have been watching Buffy since I was 13 and of course I was too young to fully understand a lot of the concepts, but I have continued to rewatch over the course of the last 20 years and as I got older my opinions have changed. But even at such a young age I learned a lot from Buffy's character and the rest of the gang. I think your take is a lot more philosophical than many, if not all other reactors I have watched. To be honest it is a shame because Buffy has many underlayers and a lot of morally gray areas. I cannot say I agree or disagree, but I think that is the point, isn't it? Life isn't perfect and although actions have consequences and while some may see black and white, others can relate to the gray areas. I can't wait for more Buffy analysis!

Mayra Martinez

Usually it's a case of just alternating Buffy, The Good Place, Better Call Saul, but it can honestly depend. All good! Always happy to answer :) and thank you! Glad you're enjoying 😁

Tyler Alexander

Hey, no worries, I understand life can be hectic. Only reason I asked is because well I love Buffy and since I don't see a schedule I thought maybe it's a once-a-month thing. I have really been enjoying your reactions but honestly, I am only here for Buffy. My friend asked about it too, so I figured, let me ask directly. lol

Mayra Martinez

Ahah not really for early access. Tbh I'm behind, I've been ill/away, I was supposed to have Rings of Power finished by now. Probably going to edit a good place next and then the Buffy I have, and then finish Rings :) sorry for the wait!

Tyler Alexander

Do you have a schedule for Buffy? When do you normally upload Buffy episodes, asking for a friend.

Mayra Martinez

Yasssss.

Shannon

Honestly I don’t think I would mind watching your thinking process, it might actually be pretty interesting so if you ever change your mind or want to try again I would happily watch it! But I understand if you’re not up for it either, you’re the creator, whatever works for you.

💙💙💙

Tyler Alexander

Thank you! 💙 And yeah there was some great stuff from David in this one.

Tyler Alexander

Yeah, I'm doing Gingerbread 🙌🏼

Tyler Alexander

Thank you, that's really nice of you and I'm glad you're enjoying ☺️ I've tried doing full commentaries in the past (sort of), it doesn't really work with my style unfortunately, or at least it doesn't really add much. I mostly keep all of the moments when I talk in the videos, and I just cut around them to make the video so you're not having to watch me think or deliberate on how to word something 😂

Tyler Alexander

Yeah, I plan to cover Angel.

Tyler Alexander

Yeah I planned to cover Angel and just treat them both as one show in the sense that I'd alternate episodes.

Tyler Alexander

I second this (full commentary)!!

StephanieB

There are so many seeds planted in this episode. Some people love the Angel series more than Buffy's because of the themes it touches on. I wonder if you would be one of those people. Do you plan to watch Angel as well, or would that be taking on too much? I agree with the person who mentioned crossover episodes. Those episodes are so good, it would be criminal to miss them. Plus things in way later seasons of Buffy would have more context.

Jennifer McIntyre

I agree that coming from a troubled home life is understandable but doesn't excuse the bad things. I'll leave that there lol excellent reactions as usual!

Pauline Robertson

Have you considered if you’re going to watch Angel at all? I’d assume no, but two things - one, the show expands much more on the seeds planted here and two, even if you don’t, there are a handful of episodes that crossover with Buffy ones that are almost a necessity for you to watch, not just for full context but because they’re really. damn. good.

Shannon

Buffy's take on A Christmas Carol, complete with Angel getting visited by the ghosts of his past on Christmas Eve! Conceptually it feels like it shouldn't work, but Jenny's ghost is so creepy and I love both David and Sarah's performances in their last scene. It's only a theory, but I strongly believe that they stuck Angelus in that wig and moustache to distract from SMG's terrible bangs in this episode. Maybe to distract from the accent, too! So excited for you to get stuck into the second half of this season - the first half of season 3 is a bit bogged down by the relationship drama imo, but there's some great episodes from here on out!

Lucy

Love more Buffy <3 so happy for a double treat! Season 3 isn’t really one I rewatch much, it’s not bad but I only really like a handful of episodes from it. But watching along with you is actually making me enjoy it more than I used to! So thanks for that. To me this is the only episode about Angel that is remotely interesting on BTVS, things get much more interesting and in depth on his own show for sure. I find him so one dimensional with Buffy when he is not Angelus. Can’t wait for the next uploads! Especially Helpless coming soon! I was wondering, would you consider doing full reaction on Patreon? I don’t know if it’s doable for you but I would love to see the full episodes with your commentary. You have a great take and you dig much deeper than other reactors I have seen and I find myself wanting more! Thanks for your work, it’s really appreciated!

Wanted to point out that the snow wasn't so much of a miracle it was more so the fact it snowed in southern California (which as I live here, it does not do; at least not for the last 54 years according to google)

Corey

This is def a scary Halloween episode with David's accent and Sarah's bangs. Gives me chills

Corey

It is perhaps the only Angel focusing episode that has my interest (apart from when he is Angelus of course). I'm not a big fan of his character in Buffy and I think he is not utilized well during season 3. In fact I only became attached to him during his own show (where he has his own journey and storylines that don't revolve only around Buffy. And no, this is not a spoiler, it is kind of obvious). In fact this episode is more or less considered as Angel 1.0 because it deals with themes that are important for Angel the character and his future journey. I will just point out a thing about how BTVS deals (or rather doesn't deal) with religion. It is quite surprising that a show about vampires doesn't talk at all about religion (and it was uncommon at the time if you consider the vast majority of works dealing with vampires previously to the show). I think it's the first time the show alludes to the fact that some sort of deities (I can't think of a better term right now) may exist in this universe. We are presented with an entity who pretends (and seems to be according to Giles) the source of all evil. And in the same time, a miracle (in the form of the unexpected and very convenient snow) is happening as if something wants Angel to live. Is it relevant? Will it ever be part of a storyline or just a small piece of world building? I won't answer to that (of course) but I just find it interesting in a fantasy (or rather fantastic) show that usually doesn't deal at all with religion and/or beliefs. And, of course, thanks for those two episodes in only 48 hours. You are spoiling us (but I don't complain). You really are my favorite BTVS reactor (even if your videos are far more interesting and deep that merely reacting to the show).

I love that you immediately pointed out Buffy's bangs the moment she appeared on-screen. Sarah Michelle Gellar memes herself in this episode on Instagram all the time. She even shows her kids pictures from it to scare them off from doing anything wild with their hair, lol. Poor David's accent hasn’t improved much either, has it? 😂 Your take on Xander is really mature. I tend to defend him a bit, but there's no denying he's problematic, especially in how he handled Angel's return. Some of his attitudes toward Willow and Buffy (more so) definitely have an incel vibe as well, which is never a good look. That said, he's a complex character, like all of them on this show, with a mix of flaws and heroic qualities. There's some major character development for Xander coming soon, and I’m really curious to see what you think about it. As for Angel, it's important to see Liam (his human name), Angelus, and Angel as distinct facets of who he is. Even among demons and vampires, he's particularly sadistic. We know that when someone becomes a vampire, it's not as simple as the demon being a completely separate entity—it still carries elements of the person. The question of how responsible Angel (with a soul) is for the actions of Angelus is a tricky one. I lean toward thinking he's not culpable, but it's definitely not black and white. A lot of this will be explored in much more depth in his own show. Another stellar reaction and a nice surprise seeing another Buffy reaction so quickly after the last!

Loved seeing the back to back Buffy videos! I've loved your perspective on this series, especially the episodes that I think of as mid season filler. I always have a new appreciation for those after seeing them through your lens. That being said, I can't wait til we get back to the main arc of this season, lol.

Kesa

Curious if you’ll rewatch gingerbread since you’ve already watched it during your beginning/middle/end thing. Can’t wait for after gingerbread, another one of my fave eps and then the Zeppo, can’t wait for your thoughts on both. I usually skip Zeppo on rewatches but will watch it with you

Back to back reactions! It must be Christmas. Didn't know it had come out yet about Xander's home life, but I guess that is out there. (Sort of). But that combined with the recent social media battle between gens got me thinking. All the Scoobies are the end of Gen X, but they are Gen X - latchkey kids. And each one of them has various levels of trauma happening with their home life. Cordy, Oz, Willow, and Xander: you don't see their parents or have a spoken hint of Xander's until now. You know Cordy's are rich and that's all. And these kids are up and out at all hours of the night. Then there is Buffy. And while most of us adore Joyce, she was a bit neglectful and rough with Buffy emotionally in the first couple of seasons. Though she's come around, Buffy's dad isn't and Giles kind of steps up and fills that spot. It's kind of interesting to look watch your reaction and to hear your commentary under this lens. "Explains, doesn't excuse" -- I agree with this in most things really. Cheers.

"We're about to see some half-naked men." Declares himself wrong while Angel is literally on the screen with no shirt on. :)

this one is so great, i love all the dialogue at the end on the hill with buffy and angel. i also feel like this does a great job showcasing david boreanaz's acting. we got that with the angelus arc, but to see him stretching himself while playing the angel character is really nice. there's obviously nothing wrong with his acting anywhere else, but his character is pretty stoic so we don't get to see it a lot. amazing reaction, and thank you for bringing it to us so soon after the last one! i can never have enough of these

esme

Hey Tyler, I’m excited to finish the third season with you! As always, you brought up great points and an amazing analysis of the episode. I wish I could talk more, but I don’t want to accidentally drop any spoilers. Anyway, I can’t wait for the next videos!
