Actually, the OG comics were super dark and edgy. The rules about what comics could and couldn't show had really eased up by then, so they leaned into it. Also, funny story. The first issue of TMNT was meant to be a one-shot story. That's why Shredder dies at the end. However, the reading public instantly fell in love and demanded more. But since the creators didn't really have plans for a long overarching story, they just did whatever they wanted and everyone loved it. But eventually they decided to bring Shredder back to life and have him be the main antagonist.

2024-10-19 22:05:39 +0000 UTCAgreed. Also, although the Dream Beavers are original characters made for this show, I think they would've fit in quite well in the OG Image comics. The whole concept of the Turtles fighting evil mutants was popularized by the 87 cartoon, but the 84 comic series was kinda all over the place and not afraid to get weird, which is why people loved it. In the early years the Turtles fought the Foot Clan, evil scientists, crime bosses, alien dinosaurs, time traveling demons and ancient demi-gods. So interdimensional beavers would've been par for the course.

2024-10-19 20:29:42 +0000 UTCThis was that favorite guest appearance I was talking about. Dire and Dread Beaver are both voiced by Robert Englund, Freddy Kreuger himself. His voice is so iconic and I always love it when he does VA work. He was Scarecrow in Injustice 2 and it was just as cool. 10/10 episode all around. If you remember, Speed Demon was the car that ran over the spilled mutagen that fell out of tree in the frog episode. My best guess is that he was very loosely based on the story Christine by Stephen King, in which the titular Christine is a living car. I’m guessing Dr. Cluckingsworth got such a rather beneficial mutation because that wasn’t pure mutagen, but rather a sort of mutagenic gasoline from the car, so I’m guessing there were slightly different effects. Plus, it had no human DNA to make it humanoid like the turtles did.
