I don't remember if he was supposed to be in Easy Company or not. "Potato Masher" is the nickname given to the famous German stick grenade of WWII because of it's resemblance to the potato mashing kitchen utensil. The assault on Brecourt Manor is even more impressive when you know the defending Germans outnumbered the Americans almost 2 to 1. Because defenders have such a large advantage normal military doctrine says the attacker should outnumber the defender at least 3 to 1.
