I didn't look at the cast before watching this, and I only recognized Sam Elliot after I heard him speak. He has such an iconic, recognizable voice. It's so strange seeing him without facial hair.

It makes an attempt to show the Vietnamese opposition as tough, smart and capable fighters - and doesn't dehumanise them. It also tries to show the tremendous human cost of war. I'm glad you watched it, but also happy that you pick a few happier movies here and there! "LZ" is military shorthand for "Landing Zone" so you were close! "Custer" is a name you'll hear again and again (particularly if you get to see The Last Samurai, which I think you'll enjoy very much). Custer was a famous US general in the 19th century, who's forces were surrounded and massacred by a superior Native American force at a place called the Little Bighorn. He commanded the 7th Cavalry, which is why Hal looks a bit grim when they tell him he's taking command of the new 7th Cavalry. Not exactly a good omen. I haven't seen this movie in ages, but I recognized the original radio operator this time - it was Agent Coulson, from the MCU! I remember in the book that this movie was largely based on, it mentioned that when one of the Vietnamese soldiers first saw the great and terrible fiery sheets of napalm dropping from the sky, he asked his officer whether it was the atom bomb. Not sure if I've mentioned it already, but for a far different take (and reasonably short mini-series) about a more modern war, watch "Generation Kill". It's definitely not about the blood and heroism like this and BoB, but you'll still find yourself growing attached the characters for the 7 episodes we're with them.
