For thousands of years, the Jedi Knights have been keepers of peace and justice in the Republic. They are the Republic's finest arbitrators, and in times of warfare, serve as the backbone of its military.
As they are by far the most visible members, "Jedi Knights" are often conflated with "Jedi," but this is a common misconception. Jedi are a culture unto themselves and span the galaxy, while Jedi Knights comprise those Jedi who have pledged their loyalty to the Republic and serve as peacekeepers or soldiers.
Jedi Knights use many weapons as any soldier would, but the most iconic is their sidearm, the lightsaber. An image of the Lightsaber is used as the Republic banner in times of war. While Republic law prohibits any trained Jedi from officially holding office, many knights have political sway due to their reputation.
Some Jedi outside the Order of Knights view them with suspicion, believing that serving in the military invites the Dark Side of the Force. Others, however, believe that Knighthood is the highest honor a Jedi can achieve.
