I had a deep desire to make a secret monster fighting den.
Carved into the sheer face of a towering cliff, this once-mighty dwarven stronghold has been repurposed into the estate of a wealthy and eccentric hunter. While the front-facing chambers serve as living quarters, the deeper halls conceal a far more sinister purpose—a hidden gambling den perched above a brutal monster-fighting pit.
The front half of the stronghold contains living spaces such as dining halls, sitting rooms, and numerous comfortable bedrooms create the illusion of a luxurious countryside retreat. The favorite room of the house is the trophy hall, where taxidermy heads of wolves, bears, and other game animals decorate the walls. The prized trophy is the massive dragon head mounted above the hearth. Few know that beneath this fearsome relic lies a passage into the estate’s darkest secret.
Beyond the trophy hall, a concealed entrance—activated by uttering a magic phrase—reveals an ethereal doorway shimmering beneath the dragon’s maw. This leads to an secret gambling lounge where the elite gather to wager on deadly spectacles. Fine wines and rare liquors flow freely as patrons watch from the balconies overlooking the fighting pit below. At the corner of the balconies, creatures are displayed in reinforced cages, admired like rare artifacts and auctioned off to the highest bidder. A small room collects the fighting bets and gambling money to be redistributed after the show is concluded
Beneath the lounge, the pit itself is a brutal arena where monsters and captured beasts are forced into savage combat. A magical, invisible force field prevents monsters from climbing or flying out of the pit into the lounge while allowing a full view of the fight. The monsters await their turn in the bloodstained ring from within holding cells carved into the stone mountain. Two rooms beneath the lounge have winches and levers that operate the various gates of the arena.
Reaching the pit is no simple feat for outsiders, but the estate hides multiple concealed routes for those in the know:
The Trophy Hall Passage: The primary entrance, hidden beneath the dragon head, leads to the lounge and viewing balconies.
The Storage Room Passage: A hidden panel behind an unassuming cupboard in a supply room opens to a dimly lit corridor. Just past here, guards and monster wranglers manage the beasts, preparing them for battle.
The Meat Cellar Path: A more gruesome route lies within the pantry’s meat cellar. Behind a row of hanging aprons, a passage leads to a grim preparation room—where food is stored for the creatures, and where the remains of fallen combatants may be repurposed into "delicacies" for the most twisted of patrons.
The Northern Cavern Tunnel: A reinforced gate along the northern wall of the pit connects to a hidden tunnel system. This is the primary means of transporting creatures in and out, ensuring the operation remains discreet. It is heavily guarded, and rumors suggest the tunnels lead deeper into the mountain, perhaps even to undiscovered dwarven ruins.
Unwilling Participants: Not all combatants in the pit are beasts—some are prisoners forced into the bloodsport against their will.
A Monster Gone Loose: What happens if a particularly dangerous creature escapes its cage?
A Rival’s Interference: A faction opposed to this monstrous enterprise may attempt to sabotage the operation—or hire adventurers to do it for them.
