ALCHEMIST'S HOLLOW [25x30]

I wanted to try doing a hollowed-stump type map, maybe for a witch or hag brewing potions in the woods. This dwelling spans four distinct levels:

Living Quarters:
A rickety stairway climbs the exterior of the hollowed trunk to the third floor, guiding guests to a deceptively welcoming home. Just inside the entryway is a spiral staircase leading to the upper floor. Past the stairwell lies a small living room filled with furniture that feels both lived-in and slightly askew. A rug woven with root-like motifs covers the floorboards, and a mushroom growing from the wall casts a gentle glow.

The adjoining kitchen is functional, if cluttered, with hanging pots, bundles of garlic, and a kettle that never quite stops simmering. Just beyond, a narrow pantry holds jars of preserves, dried meats, and suspiciously labeled snacks. The whole space hums with an uncanny domestic charm—perhaps too cozy to be trusted. From the kitchen, a stairwell descends deeper into the trunk.

Sanctum:
The top floor houses the more private rooms. The spiral staircase opens onto a small hallway. One door leads to a bathroom, while another conceals a cramped guest room—barely more than a cot and a chest—meant for a visiting apprentice or an unfortunate child who wandered too far into the woods.

The final door opens to the primary bedroom, simple but comfortable, with windows offering a view of the treetops. Connected to the bedroom is a tucked-away library, its shelves lined with dusty tomes on herbology, lunar cycles, and magical theory. A writing desk is strewn with parchment, dried leaves, and inkpots. Also adjoining the bedroom—hidden behind a cracked painting—is a secret door that leads to the altar room: a narrow, candlelit space used for wild magic. The walls are etched with runes, and a stone pedestal stands at the center, stained with the residue of long-forgotten rituals.

Brewing Floor:
The stairs from the kitchen lead down to the second floor: a vast chamber dominated by a massive cauldron suspended above a fire pit. A large oar rests in the stewing pot, used to stir the swirling brews—tinctures, poisons, and elixirs alike.

A smaller storage room branches off the main chamber, filled with crates of reagents and bundles of aromatic herbs hanging from the ceiling to dry. Another room is covered floor-to-ceiling with shelves cluttered with jars of dried roots, pickled eyes, glowing fungi, and powdered minerals. Bottles of finished tinctures and volatile poisons are carefully labeled—some in forgotten languages.

Furnace Room:
At the very bottom of the dwelling, deep beneath the forest's roots, an unrelenting fire roars. This fire feeds the work above, and the air here is thick with ash, sweat, and the scent of burning herbs. Servants—willing or otherwise—tend the flames, stoking them with fresh wood dragged in through a narrow, hidden tunnel. The entrance is veiled by an illusion of brambles and tangled underbrush, nearly invisible to the untrained eye.
