Sneak peek for an upcoming video

Here's quick clip I wanted to share.  It involves taking a laser, diffracting it through a small glass rod so that the light is spread along a plane, and shooting smoke rings through that plane.

I would really value on an exposition on solitons (like smoke rings). They seem to be a stable resonace in non-linear mediums that would be useful to model neural network dynamics.

Hmm... this might be a bit difficult to properly pull off.

If you could strobe the cut-plane vertically at a high enough rate (and with a sufficiently fast camera) you could take 3-d movies of the structure of a smoke ring...

Is the laser actually diffracting or is it refracting through the rod? There do appear to be max and mins but the rod would need to be pretty thin to diffract the light.
