As night fell, at the art square on Manhattan's Pier 92, Luca walked aimlessly with his hands in his pockets.
Although many beautiful models brushed past him, and some women threw flirtatious glances and slipped him notes, he was in no mood to care.
He was pondering the issue of survival.
This is the sinful America, the paradise of the rich, where they own everything—luxury cars, beautiful women, mansions.
The poor are like dogs with broken spines—ugh, back pain. Alright, that’s an inappropriate metaphor. Anyway, in America, the poor are not only materially deprived and spiritually impotent but also powerless, living at the bottom, like stray dogs in the gutter.
Luca didn’t want to be a dog with a broken back; he wanted to be a man indifferent to money, a late-stage face-blind man, someone who has transcended bourgeois pleasures.
This was not just his current wish but also a regret from his past life.
In his previous life, he was just an up-and-coming screenwriter, who struggled for over ten years, barely earning enough for a house.
He envied the lavish lifestyle of the wealthy, those men with wives at home and countless lovers outside. But what's the use of envy?
A small-time screenwriter has no say; in a film crew, even third-rate actors don’t bother with you. It’s better to help the director wash his hair.
Sigh
Luca looked up at the sky. How could he become a rich man?
He was just a screenwriter. Besides wielding a pen and writing scripts, he had no other skills.
The profession of screenwriting is not bad in his home country; in 2002, a cultured person could at least become a teacher.
But Hollywood is different.
Hollywood never lacks scripts, and it never lacks good ones.
If a movie becomes a hit, it's the credit of the director, actors, and distributors. Does it have anything to do with the screenwriter?
No screenwriter gets a share of the profits, and no one has ever become a billionaire just by writing scripts.
Can he make it big by copying scripts?
Damn, in his last life, couldn’t he have done something else instead of becoming a screenwriter?
Luca sighed and habitually reached into his pocket. There was something hard in there, but unfortunately, it wasn’t a pack of cigarettes—it was his phone.
“You can’t smoke here. Want some gum?”
Suddenly, a hand reached out from the side, holding a pack of Trident gum.
Luca turned around in surprise and saw an African American man.
He had dark brown skin, about the same shade as Obama, tall and slim.
He had a baby face, similar to Curry’s.
Though he looked around thirty, his temples were streaked with some white hair and a few forehead wrinkles, making him seem more like in his forties.
What a complex person.
Luca sighed inwardly and declined, “Thank you, sir, but I don’t need any.”
The man with the baby face smiled and extended his other hand. “Hi, I’m Ed. May I get to know you?”
“Luca.”
Luca shook his hand. He was curious why this person approached him. The guy had noticed him wanting to smoke and came over; clearly, he had been watching for a while. Was he interested in Luca’s looks?
Sigh, what’s the use of being so handsome? So annoying!
“Luca, are you a model? You have a great physique!”
Ed, the baby-faced man, showed a bright smile, looking simple and warm.
Damn, so he’s indeed interested in my looks. Maybe there was something in the gum earlier. Good thing I didn’t take it. Or else...
He stayed alert and replied with a simple yet polite smile, “Sir, you’ve misunderstood. I’m not a model. I’m currently... unemployed.”
“Haha, that’s great. Oh, please don’t misunderstand; I mean you have an excellent image. Are you interested in a career in the entertainment industry?”
Ed chuckled lightly.
Luca was stunned. “Are you a talent scout?”
“Yes!”
Ed handed over a business card. “I’m an agent with Ford Models.”
“Ford Models?”
Luca hadn’t heard of it, but his predecessor had heard Kate mention it.
Ford Models is one of the largest modeling agencies in America, founded in 1946, with a long-standing reputation. Lauren Hutton, Brooke Shields, Naomi Campbell, and Courteney Cox from Friends were once models under its banner.
This company isn’t bad, but unfortunately...
“Ed, I think you’ve got the wrong person. I’m not a model.”
“Luca, I’ve seen your walking posture. You haven’t received any model training, so I’m asking if you’re interested in entering the entertainment industry, not just the modeling world.”
“Oh, does Ford sign non-model artists too?”
“Yes, under special circumstances, we sign exceptionally talented individuals. Like you, I see a kind of mature and steady demeanor that doesn’t match your age, along with a captivating, melancholic aura, especially in your eyes. That’s the brilliance in you, making you stand out among handsome actors. I believe you have great potential.”
Luca raised an eyebrow. A melancholic aura and eyes? Like Tony Leung?
He rubbed his chin in thought. It takes a long time to make it as a screenwriter. If he dabbles in acting, it gives him more options.
Could be worth considering.
At 8 PM, after the Victoria’s Secret show ended, Luca drove Kate home.
“What were you doing just now?”
Kate lay lazily on the back seat, her golden hair scattered casually, and her long legs propped up on the front seat—no sign of her usual ice queen demeanor.
The night wind was a bit chilly, so Luca closed the car window. “Someone approached me, said I have the potential to be a big star, and wanted to sign me. We had a little chat.”
“Wanted to take you to San Fernando Valley again? This is the third time, right? Haha~”
Kate lay in the back, laughing heartlessly.
Luca’s face darkened. After coming to America, his predecessor had three encounters with talent scouts.
The first time, Luca happily followed the scout to Los Angeles and auditioned for a regular film crew. But his acting skills were lacking, and he failed the audition.
The unscrupulous agent, noticing his assets and having a bright idea, wanted to take him to the San Fernando Valley.
San Fernando Valley is the base of adult film production. Ninety percent of adult films in America are made there.
His predecessor was shameless enough to be willing to go to San Fernando Valley.
Unfortunately, before the shoot, he messed around on the set.
When they were about to start shooting, he had a back injury and ended up in debt.
The second time, someone offered to take him to Hollywood, but after some digging, Kate found out it was a scam.
The third time, someone approached him, and Kate directly drove them away.
If not for Kate, his predecessor would have either died or become a Japanese adult film star.
Even though these were his predecessor’s experiences, they’re now a part of him, and thinking about it makes him feel embarrassed.
He coughed lightly, “Kate, this time it’s different. Do you know which agency approached me?”
“It’s probably some small agency. The big ones wouldn’t be interested in you.”
Kate said lazily.
“You’re wrong. This time, it was someone from Ford Models.”
“Ford? Impossible!”
Kate exclaimed. Ford Models is a powerful agency, even stronger than IMG, where she works. It’s indeed a big company.
“Kate, it’s true.”
Luca smiled smugly. “The agent said I have a charming aura and great potential to be a star. He’s very eager to sign me.”
“Haha, charming? You, charming?”
Kate tilted his head, took a glance, then disdainfully let go. “That person said you’re charming. Was it a woman?”
“A man.”
“Is he gay?”
“He’s perfectly normal, Kate!”
Luca said through gritted teeth.
Kate laughed a few times. “Did he just notice you?”
“Yes, is there a problem?”
Luca asked, puzzled.
Smack!
Kate clapped her hands, her full lips curling into a smile. “I know, the light outside was too dim earlier. He definitely couldn’t see clearly and thought you were charming.”
“Kate!”
Luca shouted discontentedly.
“Alright, alright, I was just joking. My Luca is still very charming.”
Kate chuckled lightly. “So, Luca, did you sign with them?”
“No, I plan to work with them for a while first. If it’s a good fit, I’ll sign later.”
“Is that so?”
Kate squinted her long lashes and sighed regretfully, “Luca, you missed out. You should’ve signed with Ford immediately. Even if they regret it later, you’d still get a breach-of-contract fee.”
“Kate, am I that bad?”
Luca was speechless. Only a sister could say such things; otherwise, their relationship would’ve been severed long ago.
“Alright, alright, Luca, you’re excellent. You’re just wasting your potential, wasting your talent. This time, I believe you’ll definitely become a big star.”
Kate wiggled her toes, looking very serious.
Luca curled his lips. Yeah, right, like I believe you.
“Luca, what’s the name of the agent from Ford? I’ll call to check.”
Kate pulled out her phone.
“Ed Dominic.”
“Ed Domi
... What? Ed Dominic?”
“Yeah, that’s his name card. Do you know him?”
Kate took the card and laughed loudly, laughing so hard she collapsed on the seat.
“What’s going on?”
Luca was dumbfounded.
“He got stuck with someone from his own side.”
“What?”

Chapter 7: Luca is So Handsome
Ed Dominic was in a great mood today.
He was just wandering around the square in the evening, not expecting to meet someone with such potential as Luca.
The first time he saw Luca, he noticed how this young man navigated the bustling crowd alone. His tall, slender figure, handsome face, and otherworldly demeanor immediately caught the eye.
After talking with him, Ed discovered that this young man's inner qualities were equally exceptional.
Luca had a graceful manner of speaking, extraordinary insight, and a warm, polite demeanor. Combined with his British-style looks, he resembled a true gentleman.
In the entertainment and modeling circles, there’s never a shortage of beautiful appearances. What’s lacking is a striking aura.
According to the Model Industry Rules survey and analysis, there is a consensus in the modeling industry: to become a top model, looks and physique can account for at most 50%. The remaining part is all about aura.
Take supermodels, for example—Kate Moss has a sickly beauty, Carmen Kass has a Madonna-like aura, and Kate Kelly has an icy charm. They aren't the most beautiful, but their auras make them the most memorable.
This kind of distinct aura serves as an identifier, like a red mole at the corner of the mouth.
Luca is also this kind of talent.
"Thank God!"
Ed grinned, revealing his pearly white teeth. He took out his camera and uploaded the photos he had just taken to his computer. Among them were several pictures of Luca.
In the neon-lit square, amidst the bustling crowd, Luca had his head slightly lowered, with a lock of hair falling over his forehead, partially covering his furrowed brows.
Under the glow of the neon lights and the setting sun, his forehead, brows, cheekbones, and jaw were like meticulously carved sculptures from the Renaissance period. His lips, arguably the most sensual and perfectly shaped among all men, weren't too thick or too thin. His looks would astonish not only women but men as well.
In another photo, Luca brushed his long hair aside and looked up at the sky with a complex expression on his face—melancholy, nostalgia, and sorrow.
A young face, yet it was marked with a mature sense of weariness. He seemed like someone carrying countless stories within him. Such a unique face is perfect for acting. His aura resembles that of the late Hollywood golden boy, River Phoenix, a talented actor who passed away too soon.
When Ed saw this scene through his lens, he was instantly moved and couldn't wait to approach him.
"Wonderful!"
Ed admired Luca's photos one by one. These photos were so artistic that a few could be used for a magazine spread without any retouching.
"What's wonderful?"
Ed's wife walked into the study.
"I met a very promising newcomer. Come take a look!"
Ed said excitedly.
"Really?"
His wife glanced over curiously. He was indeed handsome and had a star quality. But when she looked closer, she was stunned. "Isn't this Luca?"
"Huh~"
Ed turned around in surprise. "Nina, you know Luca?"
"Don't you know him?"
Mrs. Nina Heath asked in confusion.
"Of course, I know Luca, but how do you know him?"
"Luca is Kate's brother. I remember introducing him to you. Did you forget?"
"Kate's brother? Kate Kelly's brother?"
Ed exclaimed loudly. "No way, no way! I met Luca last year. He had dyed, multi-colored hair, weighed over 200 pounds, had a messy beard, and looked utterly disheveled. How could he and this Luca be the same person?"
Nina chuckled, "I told you before, Luca was once an outstanding football player. A car accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, ruining his bright future. He stayed in the hospital for over a year, gained weight, and became very despondent—that's the Luca you saw.
After coming to New York, Kate supervised his weight loss every day and encouraged him to pull himself together. Now, he’s doing a bit better."
"So that’s how it is!"
Ed sighed softly. "No wonder he looked so melancholic when I saw him. He’s a young man whose dreams have been shattered."
"Ed, when did you take these photos? Why did you photograph him?"
"I'm planning to sign Luca."
"Sign Luca? Are you crazy?"
Nina was shocked.
"Nina, Luca's external qualities are at an A level. His melancholy aura, while not fully mature, still reaches a B+ level. Additionally, his elegant demeanor and gentle nature, which I really like, also rate at an A level. He’s faced setbacks and is now trying to rise again. Such resilience I rate as A+. With such an overall performance reaching an A level, why shouldn't I sign him?"
Nina was silent for a moment. "Elegant demeanor, gentle nature? Are you talking about Luca?"
"Of course!"
Ed turned to look at her. "Nina, I'm puzzled. How could you not see how outstanding Luca is?"
"Luca, outstanding? Hahaha~"
Nina laughed a few times, then suddenly asked, "You haven't signed him yet, have you?"
"No, Luca doesn't trust my capabilities yet. He wants to work together for a while before deciding."
Ed said regretfully.
"Oh, that's great!"
Nina breathed a sigh of relief. "Don't pursue Luca any further. I'll call Kate later and tell her it was a misunderstanding. Your verbal agreement is null and void."
"Nina, this is my job. Please don't interfere!"
Ed said with a displeased look.
"Ed~ Do you know what kind of person Luca is?"
Before Ed could respond, she continued excitedly, "He’s lazy, likes to drink, fight, and is quite the womanizer. He often harasses other models. He’s a good-for-nothing who causes trouble. Do you know what people who know him call him?"
Ed frowned but didn't say anything.
"Damn Luca! Everyone says he's just a pretty face living off his sister, a failure who can't do anything right. Today, Kate had a runway show and asked him to bring her hat from home. Instead, he went off to fool around with two women, almost messing up Kate's show. Do you still think he's outstanding?"
Nina asked coldly.
Ed stroked his chin and silently stared at the photos on the screen.
Nina shook her head and took her phone, ready to make a call.
"Nina!"
Ed called out calmly.
Nina stopped at the door.
"Nina, remember in high school, you were the president of the ballet club? You even won second place in the community competition."
"Ed?"
Nina didn't understand why he was bringing this up.
"Nina, your dream was to become a professional ballet dancer, right?"
"Why bring that up? It’s all in the past."
Thinking about her youth, Nina felt a little emotional.
"Remember when you were seventeen, you accidentally fell off a ladder and broke your right foot? The doctor told you you could never dance again. You were very upset, became quite irritable, and gained 20 pounds in a year."
"Ed!"
Nina was a bit annoyed. Why bring up embarrassing stuff? Can we still have fun together after this?
Ed smiled slightly, turning to look at his wife. "Nina, don't you think Luca's experience is very similar to yours?
You were both excellent. You had a lot of talent for dancing, but unfortunately, you had to give it up due to an injury.
Luca was even more of a genius. He once led his regional club to win the National Youth League Championship. He delivered amazing performances in world-class football matches and even secured a spot with Real Madrid.
He was just one step away from success, the final step. But just as he was nearing paradise, his wings were broken. Heaven drifted further away. Can you understand the pain and sorrow he must have endured?"
Nina’s eyes reddened immediately.
"He experienced deeper despair than you, bore more sorrow than you, yet he is as strong as you are."
Ed gently wiped the tears from his wife's face.
"Nina, I saw his melancholy and inner struggle with my own eyes. Now he wants to pick himself up again. Shouldn't we help him?"
"Just like you helped me back then?"
Nina smiled through her tears.
"No, you helped me!"
Ed gently embraced his wife.
"Mom and Dad, are you kissing?"
Suddenly, a little girl around ten years old burst in, her big eyes blinking curiously as she looked at the two of them.
Nina and Ed exchanged a smile.
"Eve, it's time for bed!"
"Okay, okay. Goodnight, Mom and Dad!"
The little one waved her tiny hand and closed the door thoughtfully.

*Chapter 8: Soaked to the Skin*
Upper East Side, New York City, Apartment on 76th Street.
In the dining room, Luca and Kate were having breakfast.
"Luca, do you think Ed would still want to be your agent if he knew about you?"
"Doesn't matter. Someone as exceptional as me doesn't need to worry about appreciation."
"Haha, it's good that you think that way!"
"Of course, I've always been optimistic."
Luca shrugged, taking big bites of peppered beef, corn on the cob, baked eggs, and pancakes—a very hearty breakfast.
Kate's breakfast was much simpler: fruit salad, toast, and oatmeal—a completely vegetarian meal.
As a model, she's very strict about her diet, eating only low-fat, low-calorie, anti-aging foods—nuts, fruits, vegetables, and a bit of fish. It's almost like she's on an elf's diet.
Gulp~
Luca heard someone swallowing. He grinned and cut a piece of beef, offering it.
"Kate, want some?"
"Do you want to die?"
Kate glared, gritting her teeth, her brows like sharp swords drawn from their sheath.
"Alright then!"
Luca didn't dare argue, obediently withdrawing his hand. "Kate, you work out a lot every day and still diet; that's not good for your health."
"So what? I'm a model!"
Kate calmly said while eating blueberries.
"Have you ever thought about quitting?"
"Quit? Haha~ If I quit, how would we survive in America?"
Kate looked at him curiously.
"There's me! I can earn money and support us!"
Luca put down his fork, speaking earnestly, "Kate, you say I'm a genius, and I agree with you. So I've decided to work seriously, make money, and before long, I'll be a billionaire."
"A billionaire?"
Kate chuckled, biting the silver spoon. "Alright, Luca, when you're a billionaire, we'll go back to Brazil, buy a big estate, build a mansion, and spend our days riding horses, making wine, and growing cocoa, okay?"
"Okay, it's a deal."
Luca bumped his fist against Kate's.
Ding-dong~
Around ten o'clock, the apartment doorbell rang.
Kate put down her magazine and opened the door monitor. Nina and Ed were at the door.
"Good morning."
Kate opened the door, greeting them with a smile.
"Good morning, Kate!"
Ed followed Nina into the apartment, glancing around the living room. "Is Luca home, Kate?"
"Yes, he's in the gym!"
"Oh~"
Ed nodded. Working out is a good sign.
He took the coffee Kate handed him, thanking her. "Kate, I have something to discuss with you and Luca."
"Oh?"
Kate raised an eyebrow. Just as expected?
"Kate, I saw Luca at the pier square yesterday. He's outstanding—his appearance and demeanor are very striking. I'd like to invite him to join Ford Models and be his agent."
"Ed, I already know about this."
Kate spoke up, not wanting to make things awkward. "Have you changed your mind now? But you don't have to worry. I understand your thoughts, and Luca won't mind."
"Changed my mind?"
Ed was taken aback. He spread his hands with a smile. "No, Kate, I haven't changed my mind."
"What?"
Kate was surprised. "You still want to be Luca's agent?"
"Kate, it's true."
Nina smiled, a bit helpless. "I told Ed about Luca's situation, everything, hoping he would reconsider, but he insisted."
"Luca is a promising newcomer. I'm looking forward to working with him."
Ed said sincerely.
"Oh, that's fantastic!"
Kate exclaimed in surprise. Ed is a great agent, more experienced than Nina. He's worked with famous models like Heidi Klum and Courteney Cox and has a wealth of experience.
With his help, Luca's chances of becoming a star increased.
In the apartment's gym, Luca, wearing workout shorts and a T-shirt, was training his upper body strength and leg power on the equipment.
He had been at it for so long that his clothes were soaked with sweat, dripping onto the carpet. Still, he gritted his teeth and continued—one, two, three times.
Ed stood at the door for a while, nodding in satisfaction. This energy is excellent.
"Hey, Luca!"
"Ed, what are you doing here?"
Luca let go of the resistance bands, greeting him.
"Nina and I came together."
Ed flashed a bright smile.
"Ed, I didn't expect you and Nina to be married; what a coincidence."
Luca wiped the sweat off his face, laughing.
"Haha~ I didn't expect you to be Luca either. We've met before, remember? You were in terrible shape then. Yesterday, when Nina mentioned you, I couldn't believe you were the same person."
Luca thought about it but had no impression; he was probably too dazed back then.
"Ed, are you here for something today?"
"Luca, I want to officially be your agent."
Ed said seriously.
His decision to sign Luca wasn't impulsive but something he had planned for a while.
The fashion industry is highly competitive, with supermodel incomes soaring. Mid- to lower-level models not only earn less but also face the risk of being replaced.
Agent incomes are also declining.
The models under his management weren't doing as well as Kate, making his income less than his wife Nina's. He didn't have much say at home.
After six months of careful consideration, he decided to use his resources to cultivate an actor. He searched for a long time before choosing Luca.
This is an attempt, an investment, hoping for a good outcome.
Luca was a bit surprised but also happy. Ed has a good character and strong social skills. Having an agent like him would be beneficial for his career.
"Ed, years from now, people will say you have a great eye."
"Haha, I look forward to that day!"
Since Ed came, Luca ended his workout early.
He took a quick shower in the bathroom, changed into casual wear, and went to the living room.
Kate and Nina were discussing the weekend's winter fashion show.
Luca greeted them and walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling window.
There was a 20-square-foot coffee bar, a well-decorated counter, and two booths by the window.
Sitting in the booth, one could see the bustling Third Avenue below, Lexington Avenue in the distance, and even Central Park.
In his previous life, he had dreamed of owning an apartment like this—gazing out at the metropolis, brewing a cup of coffee, holding a notebook, writing what he wanted to write, leisurely and free.
Now, he had it, but it all belonged to Kate. What he truly wanted, he still had to strive for himself.
"Luca, what kind of person do you want to become?"
Ed withdrew his gaze from the window.
"A rich man."
Luca replied casually.
"Haha, that's right. In New York, everyone wants to be rich."
Ed laughed. "Luca, I told you yesterday I'd arrange a role for you soon. Now I want to change the plan."
"Please, go on."
Luca poured two cups of coffee, sat on the soft sofa, and listened as Ed said, "Luca, you're not fully recovered yet. Acting now might not be a good idea."
"Oh, what do you suggest?"
"First, I suggest you keep working out and build a sexy physique. I'll try to get you some modeling shoots, as well as MV and commercial endorsement work, to hone your performance in front of the camera."
"I have no objections!"
Whether Ed mentioned it or not, he would continue to work out. A healthy body is essential.
"Luca, would you be willing to study at a performing arts school for a while?"
Ed asked gently.
"Go to school?"
Luca pondered. He's a screenwriter, and in the future, he wants to succeed by "borrowing" scripts.
But the previous Luca practiced soccer from a young age and didn't graduate high school, so his education was limited. Suddenly becoming a screenwriter might raise some eyebrows.
Going to school for a while could be a good cover.
"Yes, Luca, you're Brazilian. To establish yourself in the American entertainment industry, you need to blend in and gain recognition.
Starting from school is a good option.
When people ask about your background, you can say you graduated from a performing arts academy in the U.S. rather than being a foreign actor with no acting foundation, which is hard for audiences and media to accept."
Luca nodded. Though the former Luca had a Western appearance, he was still a Brazilian immigrant.
English, French, and Canadian actors can win Oscars, but there's still a bias against actors from developing countries like China, India, and Brazil in Hollywood.
It's like an African actor trying to win the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Award—almost impossible due to prejudice. Even if they do get the award, it's usually for political reasons.
The same bias exists in America.
"Ed, how long do I need to study? I hope it won't be too long."
Luca didn't want to waste precious time in school.
"Half a year or a year, depending on your learning ability."
"Alright then."
(End of the chapter)
*Chapter 9: The City of Desire*
Manhattan Academy of Arts.
Luca stepped out of the parking lot, treading on the fallen yellow leaves of the sycamores and pines, with his textbooks in hand, and walked into the school.
Manhattan Academy of Arts is one of the top five art schools in New York, offering majors in music, dance, drama, painting, and more.
America's sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston, graduated from this school.
The tuition is $20,000 per year, and taking additional courses costs extra.
Kate paid the tuition. She was delighted to see Luca return to school and quickly swiped her card.
Luca felt a bit embarrassed. He had promised to be independent and strong, but here he was, once again relying on someone else.
But it felt good!
"Luca, in Act II, Scene II of Hamlet, Ophelia says to her father, 'My lord, as I was sewing in my closet, Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced, no hat upon his head, his stockings fouled, ungartered, and down-gyvèd to his ankle, pale as his shirt, his knees knocking each other, and with a look so piteous in purport as if he had been loosed out of hell to speak of horrors—he comes before me.' Can you portray Hamlet's expression at that moment?"
"Sure, Mr. Rose!"
At the school, acting classes are conducted one-on-one.
Luca's teacher is an opera singer, a middle-aged white man in his forties named Rose.
He frequently performs on the Broadway stage, acting in renowned plays like Hamlet, King Lear, and Harry Potter.
Luca had watched him perform twice. Rose's acting skills were quite impressive, which was why Luca chose him as his teacher.
"Luca, remember, emotions are not what you imagine but rather a real experience. Melancholy people are usually very passive; they don't need much expression or movement, just a look. Yes, that's the look. Your eyes are naturally melancholic. Just add a bit of madness and chaos, and you'll do well. But remember, while acting, you have to align with the entire play. In the second act, Hamlet is merely pretending to be mad. He's trying to frighten Ophelia, not as sinister and terrifying as you portrayed."
"I understand, Mr. Rose!"
After the acting class, Luca left the school with two books on acting.
Studying here is convenient. You can arrange your time freely, choose your teachers, and only need to make an appointment a day in advance. Everything is considered for the students.
"Luca, get in the car!"
At the school entrance, Ed called out from the car.
Luca got in and exhaled deeply. Learning to act is mentally challenging and demands a lot of effort.
"How was the lesson?"
Ed handed him a cup of hot coffee.
"Not bad."
"Haha, I asked Rose. He said you have a talent for acting."
"Really?"
Luca smiled lightly. Rose probably said that to earn more class fees, though Luca indeed performed well.
"Luca, we're going to audition for Sex and the City in a while. Get ready."
Ed spoke while driving.
"Sex and the City?"
Luca was a bit surprised. This is currently the most popular TV show in the United States, now in its sixth season.
But the show is quite bold. You can tell from its name, Sex and the City. It’s labeled as an adult drama, advising children not to watch it right from the start.
The show's topics are quite explicit, covering everything from bedroom games to bisexuality, STDs, size, and more. It touches on all sensitive subjects and is as daring as it gets, with many nude and bedroom scenes.
On Douban, some summarized that almost every attractive character appearing for more than five minutes in the show will take off their clothes, shoes, everything.
Luca raised an eyebrow. "Ed, is my role a big one?"
Ed seemed to understand what he was thinking and grinned.
"This is an open audition. The specific role will be decided after the audition. Maybe the casting director will see your good figure and give you a bold role."
"Bold it is, then. Just consider it a sacrifice for art."
"Good attitude! That's progress!"
They got out of the car and arrived at the HBO broadcasting company.
HBO is known for producing daring American dramas, often filled with elements like sex, violence, and gore.
Sex and the City, American Gods, and Game of Thrones are prime examples.
The casting location was in the lobby on the second floor.
The lobby was full of people waiting in line—many handsome guys and pretty girls. Lots of people wanted to make an appearance on TV, hoping this could be their breakthrough.
"Luca, follow me!"
Ed led him through the crowd, explaining, "This show is a fashion drama that has a collaboration with our company. Many models under Ford have participated in it."
"Alright."
They went straight to the audition office.
"Hi, James!"
Ed greeted the staff at the door and handed over an identity registration form.
The staff glanced at Luca. "Ed, is this your new talent?"
"His name is Luca. How does he look?"
"Looks good, but a bit shy, like a little girl. Hahaha~"
Luca twitched his mouth. He was just not used to cutting in line and felt a bit uncomfortable about it, but he didn't expect to be seen as a shy girl.
"Haha, Luca, don't be nervous. It's just a minor role."
"Ed, I understand."
Luca smiled, temporarily letting go of his unease. He boldly cut in line. This was America, not back home. Some principles weren't necessary here.
The previous auditionee quickly came out. Luca took the identity form and entered the office.
There were only two people conducting the interview—a man and a woman.
The man was the casting director, a white guy in his thirties.
The woman, in her forties, was the assistant producer.
There was also a staff member on the side.
Luca handed over his personal information form and briefly introduced himself.
The man looked him up and down. "Please turn around."
Luca turned around relaxedly.
Then the man said, "Please read a line."
The staff member handed him a newspaper.
Luca took it and saw that it was that day's New York Times.
He had taken two lessons on lines. The teacher had mentioned that if you receive a line during an audition, it indicates a chance to land a speaking role.
This is the moment to seize. Read it in a relaxed tone without showing off.
He followed his teacher's advice and quickly read a passage.
"That's enough."
Suddenly, the woman spoke up. "Can you take off your coat? We need to see your physique."
Luca hesitated for a moment. Ed had guessed right.
He took off his coat and did a few bodybuilding poses to show off his muscle lines.
His body's foundation was good, and after more than ten days of training, his muscles had become solid. His biceps and chest muscles had taken shape, and his eight-pack abs were well-defined, with two V-lines—very sexy.
The woman looked him over with interest. "Alright, Mr. Luca, thank you for coming to audition. We will notify you of the specific results later."
"Thank you!"
Luca put on his jacket and left the audition room.
"How did it go? How many rounds did you go through?"
Ed had been acting calm earlier but was now somewhat expectant.
Luca smiled slightly. "I took off my clothes."
Ed laughed heartily, patting him on the shoulder. "Looks like there's hope for an important supporting role."
Leaving the building, it was already 4 PM. Luca picked up his car from school and returned to the apartment on 76th Street, Third Avenue.
"Kate, I'm back!"
"You're back!"
Kate greeted him from the wine-tasting bar. She was wearing a silk chiffon dress, with light makeup and a ponytail—simple, casual, and beautifully lazy.
She was accompanied by a guest, fellow countrywoman Adriana Lima, a honey-colored beauty with a perfect chest.
"Hi, Lima!"
Luca changed his shoes and greeted her.
"How was school?"
Lima swirled her wine glass, with a smile and dimples on her cheeks.
Luca smiled, "Not bad."
Lima blinked her fox-like eyes, teasingly. "Pretty good, huh? Lots of beauties at the art academy make it easier for you to pick up girls, right?"
Luca spread his hands. "I'm facing you and Kate, top-tier beauties, every day. How could I think of other women?"
"Luca, your words are getting sweeter."
Kate tilted her head back and laughed.
"Kate, you shouldn't have let him go to school. A little bad boy becomes a big bad boy after studying."
Lima fluttered her long lashes and gave Luca a picky glance.
"Haha, Lima, Luca isn't like he used to be. Recently, he comes back every day—no women, no drinking, no drugs. He even lost contact with his old friends. It's like he's become a monk."
"Really?"
Lima didn't quite believe it. She stretched lazily, revealing a piece of her honey-colored waist—slender and tight.
She wore a champagne-colored mini skirt that barely covered her hips, with long legs crossed—a very provocative posture.
"Luca, come have a drink with your sister~"
She called out in an alluring voice.
Luca felt his bones soften. What a deadly enchant
ress. He was tempted but knew such women were out of his league right now.
"Sorry, Lima, I've quit drinking."
He smiled slightly and left the wine-tasting room.
Lima watched his back, her expression turning a bit sour.
"Haha~"
Kate winked and smiled. "Lima, do you believe it now?"
"Nope. He hides in his room as soon as he gets home, probably secretly doing drugs or watching adult movies. Hmm, Kate, how about we go upstairs and check?"
Lima squinted her fox-like eyes, mischievously suggesting.
"No, Lima, that's not a good idea."
"Kate, didn't you say he's trying to change his bad habits? It's crucial to keep a close eye on him during this transformation."
Lima squinted her fox-like eyes, playfully naughty.

Chapter 10: What Did You Do to Lima?
In the upstairs bedroom, Luca wasn’t watching adult films, nor was he using drugs.
Lately, he's been going to bed early, waking up early, maintaining a regular workout routine, and sticking to a balanced diet and lifestyle. After two weeks of hard work, he managed to kick those bad habits. Even when his cravings for alcohol and drugs flared up occasionally, he could grit his teeth and resist.
Throughout this process, he realized one thing: a man has to be tough on himself to be tough on others.
Tap, tap, tap...
At the computer desk, Luca began working. He was copying a script.
Luca is a professional screenwriter.
When he first entered the industry, the seasoned writers told him that to get the hang of it quickly, he needed to learn from others' successful experiences and analyze some successful movie scripts. Those scripts are like nutrients—the more you absorb, the greater your potential.
Luca found this advice reasonable.
As the saying goes, "Read a book a hundred times, and its meaning will naturally reveal itself." "Read the Tang poems three hundred times; you might not be able to write poetry, but you will recite it."
If a screenwriter doesn’t analyze hundreds of successful movie scripts, how can they make a name for themselves? Unless they have money or connections.
Luca was an orphan with neither money nor connections, so he had to rely on himself for everything.
After starting the job, in his first two years, he would analyze and break down two major films every week on average. These were mainly Hollywood films, Eastern films, Korean films, and some from his own country.
He analyzed these films one by one, regardless of box office performance, as long as they had high ratings on Douban.
From the script itself to dialogue design, shooting techniques, camera language, storylines, character portrayals, to the music, lighting, props, and editing, he even analyzed some of the movie reviews.
He analyzed both the successes and failures of each film.
For each movie, he wrote tens of thousands of words in his script analysis notes. For "The Godfather" series, he once wrote over 100,000 words. It wasn’t just copy-pasting; it was written word by word.
At the beginning, all the new screenwriters wrote these analyses. After finishing, everyone would exchange insights and hold meetings to discuss who wrote the best.
They would drink a little, share writing experiences; those were fulfilling and enjoyable days.
But after half a year, he was the only one still writing.
Because after being in the industry for a while, everyone gradually realized a fact: No matter how good a script is, it's useless unless it gets made into a movie. Being able to make money is what truly counts.
This was the truth.
Luca also tried writing a couple of scripts and submitted them, but there was no response.
Feeling his skills were lacking, he focused on learning.
After two years of learning, he planned to make a stunning debut, but unfortunately, the studio went bankrupt.
He became a freelance screenwriter, taking odd jobs here and there.
In the next seven years, he participated in the scriptwriting of nearly a hundred films and TV series.
Unfortunately, none of these films were ones he wrote independently. Even if a script won an award, it didn’t feel satisfying.
In his previous life, his biggest dream was to complete a script independently and receive an award on stage alone, a dream that never came true.
In this life?
He thinks it’s possible.
"In this world, there are two kinds of people: those who live in garden villas and those like us, who mow the lawn and wash cars for them. Becoming a professional player could change all that."
This is a line from the movie "Goal!".
Recently, Luca had been pondering which movie to copy.
Coincidentally, not long ago, a British soccer movie called "Bend It Like Beckham" was released in the United States. The production cost was less than $500,000, but it grossed $76 million worldwide, sparking a trend in sports-themed movies.
After thinking for a long time, Luca decided to adapt a soccer-related movie—"Goal!".
This movie didn't perform well at the box office, but it was highly rated. Plus, it was a soccer film, and his past self was a national team player. Writing a soccer-themed movie now wouldn’t seem out of place.
So after careful consideration, he decided to make this movie his debut.
"Goal!" tells the story of a young soccer player's American dream.
In the movie, the protagonist leaves his hometown with his family and moves to Los Angeles.
While working at a Chinese restaurant, he often appears on a simple soccer field by the street. His agility and skill soon catch the eye of a scout.
Through his soccer talent and relentless effort, he eventually becomes a superstar in the English Premier League, playing for Newcastle United.
The narrative style of this movie is quite simple, and the story closely aligns with his previous identity. Using this script as a debut wouldn’t seem abrupt.
While adapting the script, Luca made a few changes. The protagonist’s nationality was changed to Brazilian, and his appearance was made to resemble himself more closely. He also changed the name to "Kaka."
His previous self knew Kaka and even played soccer together.
Unfortunately, his past self became a cripple after a car accident, while Kaka was making his mark in the soccer world, about to soar to great heights.
Using Kaka’s fame to ride a wave of popularity.
"Kaka, the ball always travels faster than you, so we need to pass."
Bang!
As he was creating, the door suddenly opened, and someone shouted, "Hey, what are you doing?!"
Luca was startled and turned around, annoyed, to see Lima standing at the door, arms crossed, her full lips pressed together, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
"Lima, why are you shouting?"
"Haha, gotcha! Luca, were you up to no good? You were so focused!"
Lima walked over with her long legs, bent down, and glanced at the screen. There was only a document with lines and lines of words.
Somewhat disappointed, she asked, "What’s this?"
"A movie review, a homework assignment."
The script wasn’t finished yet, and Luca didn’t plan to make it public.
"You were just doing homework in here?"
Lima furrowed her thick brown eyebrows, looking both surprised and suspicious.
"What else?"
Luca asked back, a bit irritated.
"I thought... haha, never mind, keep writing!"
Lima waved her hand, turned, and sat on the bed. She looked around his bedroom. The bed, wardrobe, and sofa were all neatly organized. The floor, walls, and desk were spotless, and there was even a pleasant fragrance.
Lima raised an eyebrow, noticing a big change.
Previously, the room had been plastered with hot posters of female stars and models, including herself and Kate's lingerie posters, but they were gone now.
There was also a new white art bookshelf in the corner.
The shelf was filled with hundreds of books and magazines related to film and acting, including "Hollywood Screenplay Structure Studies," "The Soul of Film," "Film Aesthetics," "Basic Theory of Film," "On Film Screenwriting, Directing, and Acting," "Film Asset Management," "The Power of Cinematography," "Classic Film Appreciation," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "A Song of Ice and Fire," and so on.
On the desk lay a thick, open book and a notebook, making it look like a studious person's room.
Tap, tap, tap...
The rhythmic tapping sound came from beside her, and Lima’s gaze shifted back to him.
He was wearing a gray long shirt and casual pants, simple yet stylish. His dark brown, medium-length hair was clean and neat, with just a lock falling over his brow. His eyebrows were beautiful, dark brown, thick, and long.
At this moment, he was frowning slightly, his well-shaped lips pressed together, his dark eyes fixed on the screen without blinking, his hands flying over the keyboard. The white glow reflected on his face made his fair complexion appear even more handsome, adding a touch of mature charm and wisdom.
Lima quietly observed his profile, puzzled. Since when did this guy become so good-looking?
"What are you looking at?"
Suddenly, Luca turned his head and asked.
Lima casually turned her head and brushed the hair falling over her ear. "Nothing, your room is a mess."
"Where?"
Luca glanced around, not seeing anything out of place.
"Everywhere. You're still the same as always; nothing has changed!"
Lima flipped her hair, twisting her waist, tightly wrapped in a body-hugging skirt, and went downstairs in a huff. The air lingered with the seductive scent of J’adore perfume—elegant, yet wild and bold.
Luca glanced at the empty doorway, not knowing what had gotten into her.
Oh well.
He didn't bother thinking too much and quietly continued typing.
"Luca!"
After a while, Kate came upstairs again, grabbing both his ears and questioning him, "Fess up, what did you do to Lima?"
"What?"
Luca was baffled.
"Don't play dumb. Lima rushed out of here and left after barely saying anything. Did you do something to her?"
Kate raised her sharp eyebrows, looking a bit annoyed.
Luca almost cried, "Kate, I haven't left this chair since I came in. What do you think I could have done?"
Kate stared at him for a couple of seconds, puzzled. "Then why did Lima leave in such a hurry?"
"You could call her and ask. I'd like to know too," Luca shrugged.
Kate thought for a moment, still puzzled. She glanced at the computer screen, "What are you writing?"
"A screenplay," Luca explained. "My screenwriting instructor encouraged us to be bold and create stories we want to tell."
"Goal of a Lifetime?"
Kate shoved him aside unceremoniously to share the seat on the sofa. "Brazilian youth team, soccer, coach, the pitch... Are you writing about soccer?"
"Yes, I am. I know a lot about soccer. I wanted to use it as a starting point and rewrite a story about a Brazilian soccer player trying to make it in America, drawing from my own experiences."
"Your story? Sounds really good."
Kate was flipping through a few pages with great interest. "The beginning is really exciting, even more interesting than articles in fashion magazines, but..."
"But what?"
"But, Luca, why am I not in your story?" Kate raised her eyebrows, sounding a bit dissatisfied.
Luca sighed, "Kate, think about it. If the main character had a supermodel sister worth millions, even if he succeeded, could it still be considered an American dream?"
"Haha, you're right. But you have to include me in the next story."
"Emmm, alright!"
