Chromatic Crossroad

Chromatic Crossroad is an artifact made from a core engine of a dimensional gate from The Great Empire of Lahanagis’s era. It comes with a device that is supposed to function as a key to activate it. An excavation team from The Tower of Arcanum found the barely functioning artifact and attempted to find a way to reverse engineer it to further their research of interplanar travel. But in the end, one of them can only create a weapon out of it. Because it’s no longer possible to mold and bend arcane energy in the air as freely as before the Arcane Rewrite, Chromatic Crossroad uses a specific gem with affinity to a particular plane of existence to power its arcane circuit. Still, it can only temporarily open up an unstable connection to that plane. Instead of a stable key, it ends up only creating a mass of elemental energy and material that coincidentally can also be wielded as a weapon.

Chromatic Crossroad is a pair consisting of a square shield and a bladeless Shortsword. The shield and the sword only count as 1 magic item when you’re attuned to both. While holding the shield you have +2 to AC in addition to the shield’s normal bonus to AC.
Elemental Pathway. Chromatic Crossroad consumes a specific type of gemstone with affinity to a particular elemental plane. It only reacts to a specific kind of gem worth at least 500 GP.
You can use your action to place a gem in the middle of the shield or switch an already placed gem with another one. Then you can use your bonus action to activate it and create a blade on the bladeless sword you’re holding in your other hand. The blade’s ability varies depending on the gem you’re using, and they last for 1 hour.
Ruby (Fire). A curved and thorny blade made of molten rock and a searing flame is created. It deals 1d6 slashing damage plus an additional 2d6 fire damage. Once per turn, when you hit a target with this magic weapon, you can cause the target to ignite in flames. At the start of each of its turns, until the gem is deactivated. The target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 2d6 fire damage. On a successful save, the effect ends.
Sapphire (Air). A whip-blade made of crackling blue lightning is created. It deals 2d6 lightning damage, and it has a 20-foot reach. When you hit a target with an attack using this magic weapon, you can make attacks targeting any number of a creature within 10 feet of your target. They took 2d6 lightning damage on a hit and pulled 5 feet toward the first target.
Emerald (Water). A frozen blade that emits a freezing cold aura is created. It deals 1d6 piercing damage plus an additional 2d6 cold damage. The ground within 10 feet of you is covered with slick ice, making it difficult terrain. When a creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, it falls prone.
Diamond (Earth). A large but blunt crystal blade that feels weightless in your hand is created. It deals 3d6 bludgeoning damage, and it has a reach property. Once per turn, when you hit a creature with an attack using this magic weapon, you can encase your target with stone and crystal to restrain them. The target must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, it becomes restrained. The target can make another saving throw at the end of their turn. On a successful save, the effect ends.
At the end of the duration or when you use a bonus action to deactivate the gem, roll a d20. If you roll a 10 or less, the gem disintegrates. If you roll a 1, a dimensional rift connecting to an elemental plane opens up on your spot.

This is a nice 4 elements weapon, and mechanically speaking it isn't anything super crazy. I honestly think my favorite thing about this sword and board combo is that the downside is a very creative one. It is fueled by expensive gemstones that have a 50% chance of breaking every time your done using it, and you have a 𝑺𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 chance of being thrown into another dimension, like the Sea of Flames or the Swamp of Oblivion, per say. Also, the portal room it comes in matching the shield looks so stylish too. Kudos to both you and the Mad Cartographer.
