A little fun fact when Ben is looking in the distance in the beginning and when said during “Did I mention” “dream about about you every day” some lore of that Ben literally dreamed about her every day and thinking about her before she even came. That’s why he looks at her like that during the first meeting because Mal is quite literally the girl of his dreams. Ben liked her from the start he didn’t need a love spell at all.
