The Nutcracker and The Four Realms Review

At least it's not Nazi rats...

Great. Sounds like perfect banned camp material. Tehehehe!

Grace Starkes

That's my fault. I'm in the process of moving out of my studio and back home and it's been an emotional thing that has made it difficult for me to work, either on my own stuff or on Bobsheaux's. :(

Raven Fox

Now that I have Disney+, I'm going to be watching Newsies very soon. :)

Raven Fox

She's trying too hard to sound "sweet." *gag*

Raven Fox

Thank you. :)

Raven Fox

Thank you!

Is anyone else TIRED of the twist villains in Disney that, of late, make absolutely no sense and come straight the hell out of nowhere?! I am so glad I didn't dignify this movie with money! If you had no idea who Christian Bale was, then I'm guessing you haven't seen one of Disney's most underrated masterpieces that I am sure both you and Raven would love, 'Newsies'. Christian Bale can sing and dance (because of course he can he's Welsh and the child of circus performers)!

Elizabeth Stinebaugh

Or the 1934 one with lorel and hardy

A.T. M

The animated one? I love that one too! Definitely an underrated movie.

One day bob should review a version of Babes in toyland

So I decided to see if what you were saying is true, and came across this in the transcripts. {Kristoff: Have you had a meal with him yet? What if you hate the way he eats? What if you hate the way he picks his nose? Anna: Picks his nose? Kristoff: And eats it. Anna: Excuse me, sir. He is a prince. Kristoff: All men do it.} Now while this may in fact be a tacit admission that Kristoff picks his nose and eats his boogers, this is actually (in the context of the scene and the theme of the movie) a means to dissuade her from marrying Hans due to the fact that they've only known each other for less than a day (as her interest in him is based on how seemingly perfect Hans is and the things they happen to have in common with each other). Plus, lest we forget that Han's an orphan raised by rocks for most of his life, even if it were true that he picks his nose, how would this be an example of masculinity gone wrong, especially when his role throughout the film is spent helping Anna on her journey when she has no clue how to get to her sister? A man in a movie can be a helpful supporting character whilst also being goofy for some of the run-time.

13: 53 frankly I"m just glad it not a scientifically accurate rat king seriously google search rat king it's kind of messed up

Jack Sullivan

except Elsa or Anna they get a pass

Jack Sullivan

Kristoff eats his own boogers and is perfectly fine with admitting as such under the pretext that ALL men do it, and he's treated like a total buffoon throughout the entire movie (even to the point where the less-than-a-day-old snowman comic relief is mocking him). You might make the argument that Sven and the Troll King aren't stupid, but... they're not men. The best examples of masculinity the movie has to offer aren't even human.

Bobsheaux

they get a pass I'm not victim blaming

Jack Sullivan

yes I mean modern looking at you star butterfly

Jack Sullivan

"MODERN Disney princess", you mean. Kinda hard to say that about Snow White, or Cinderella. lol

Bobsheaux

Wait, I'm sorry, but since when was every man in Frozen "either evil or stupid?" Yeah, Hans and the Duke of Weselton were bad guys, but how were Kristoff, Sven, or The Troll King stupid? At the most you've got Elsa and Anna's father for not understanding Elsa's powers (their mom doesn't share the blame in this regard because...?), or Olaf for being a snowman that's less than a day old, but even if I were to agree that Frozen had some sort of nefarious bent to bolster female empowerment by denigrating men as a lazy marketing ploy, how on Earth would it be comparable to this movie? I dunno man, I've heard you trash Frozen before because of its twist villain, but you really have to be stretching to find a way to do so when you resort to finding examples of "female empowerment done wrong" to compare to The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, but all you've got are two villains that happen to be dudes and a comic-relief snowman. You would've been better off using Maleficent (2015) as an example, in all honesty.

F14m3rz

Well I mean, of course Fritz would be a little naive since he’s a little boy but for the rest of the male cast, there’s no excuse. You don’t need to make your males all dummies just to make the females look smarter.

Grace Starkes

this movie further proves my theory that the Disney princess is synonymous with with word bitch

Jack Sullivan

Yeah, classic but underrated

A.T. M

Ahh yes! I love that movie! It’s probably the best nutcracker adaption since Barbie: The Nutcracker.

Grace Starkes

I hate the voice Keira Knightly uses.

Kim Carter

My favorite movie version of the nutcracker is the animated the nutcracker prince 1990

A.T. M

So let me get this straight. I, who actually WANTS a kind of adventury telling of Nutcracker (especially one with steampunk or clockpunk tech), have to pick between either Nazi rats or this? Well if that's the case I'm taking the Nazi rats! They're far less offensive than this Mary Sue girlpower bitch. But I will admit, while horribly ill fitting, the carnival and Ginger Queen are nice and creepy. I just LOVE those nesting doll guys. And wow, great ideas Raven!

Curtis Rogahn

I do like Raven’s fix on the whole girl power thing of this movie. It’s definitely an improvement.

Grace Starkes

Finally! Its been a while since the last Christmas in July review!

Daniel J

Oh boy! I actually picked this movie to see this with Myia when it came out. It wasn’t until after the movie that I realized it was a mistake lol. Luckily she’s a very forgiving person :). What’s funny is we both had different reactions to the clown nesting dolls; I was laughing at how silly they were while Myia was absolutely terrified by them.
