Yikes... I considered this movie to be underrated... but you really hammered in those loose nails. Kudos for giving it the praise for it production and acting in it... even if the story itself was the weakest element. I guess I learned to appreciate the more "subtle" touches this movie TRIES to establish. Like how when Baston starts to loose his memories, they're basically his repressed/bad ones that work their way up to his more cherished/important ones... Also: memory balls... did Pixar's Inside-Out took inspiration from this movie for that concept? And as for the spray can... my guess that it took a couple of cues from Home Alone and/or TMNT2 where they downplay violence in media and put in more "safe" action/weapons to be used by young children? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The book, while it did have Xayide and her ability to control what was empty as the villain, she wasn't the main villain with powers on par with The Nothing. The villain of the second half of the book... Was Bastion himself. Also in the book, the AURYN taking away human memories was just how it works rather than some machine taking the memories away. Still, here's an idea for something the movie could have done. Why not have it that Xayide, who starts off faceless, takes the face of Bastion's mother to more easily manipulate him? I really don't know why they didn't do that in the movie. Xayide and the mom are played by two different actresses. Why not just double cast the actress?
