Ch 60
Added 2025-03-12 05:43:52 +0000 UTCIt caught me off guard when the last three slavers turned and bolted.
But in the end, it only made things easier for Durkil, Daevon, Nick, and Alex.
Iâd been careful throughout the fight, tracking which of the lizards had used advanced spells. I left them alive just long enough for my friends to land the finishing blowsâsecuring titles and experience.
Morbid? Maybe. But if we hadnât killed them, they wouldâve enslaved us. No guilt there.
Which reminded meâ
I turned toward the wooden cage where the prisoners sat, shackled and silent.
A dozen pairs of eyes locked onto me. But one stood out.
She was strikingâdark hair, sharp features, athletic build, and eyes like polished obsidian. Beautiful, obviously.
Which meant I immediately did my best to ignore her completely.
Instead, I focused on the chains. Weâd looted several keys from the slavers, and I tested them on the cage door. None fit. Annoying, but not a problem. I grabbed the lock and wrenched it off with a burst of strength, sending metal shards scattering to the dirt. The prisoners flinched.
Right. Probably shouldâve warned them first.
I stepped back, clearing the way. "You're free," I say. "We've cleared the dungeon. My friends are finishing up looting, and weâll leave soon.â
Silence.
Then, the womanâthe one I wasnât looking atâspoke first. âWe canât thank you enough. How did you find us?â
Her voice was clear. Strong. Not at all what I expected from someone whoâd been locked in a cage for months.
I shrug, trying to keep my tone casual. âHonestly? We stumbled onto this dungeon by chance. We were looking to gain some levels. Lucky for you guys, I guess.â
"My nameâs Layton, by the way," I add awkwardly, shuffling my feet.
Just then, Mischief and the others finish looting and walk over.
Alex grins. âI think we got everything. You done playing hero over here?â
I visibly cringe.
âThank you for the update, Alex,â I deadpan, then bat my eyes dramatically. âDid you really think I looked heroic?â
âOh yeah, very heroic,â Alex shots back, smirking. âDonât think I didnât see you flex under that robe when you ripped the cage door open.â
"Was it that noticeable?" I laugh.
The prisoners⊠did not laugh.
I expected relief, maybe even some excitement now that they were free. Instead, they look tense. Like they were waiting for something to go wrong.
Thatâs when I realizeâto them, we arenât a rescue party. We are terrifying.
Mischief, a towering, pitch-black predator who had literally ripped apart their captors.
Alex, 6'10" made of pure muscle, barely contained in his stretched-out, ragged clothes.
Durkil, an even bigger fur-covered deer-man, his exposed chest covered in dried blood from the fight.
Daevon, shaman-like deerman, with antlers adorned with feathered tassels, eyes unreadable.
And then there was me. The robed figure who had cut through their slavers like a reaper.
No wonder they were on edge.
I sigh, then try again. âWhy donât we head out?â I offer, keeping my voice calm. âWe can get to know each other on the way.â
A beat of hesitation. Then, the woman nods.
In agreement, I lead the way to the portal. No one spoke as we step through, leaving the dungeonâand everything that had happened thereâbehind.
-
With the dungeon cleared, I force myself to focus. The whole reason we tackled this in the first place was to push our elites into their evolved classes. We hadnât expected to find a group of captives, but here they are.
And as much as I was eager to process our gains, I knew we had some things to sort out.
I turn to the woman Iâd spoken with earlierâthe one who seems to be in charge.
"Now that we're all out, Iâm sure you have questions. I do too. But first, whatâs your name?"
She lets out a small laugh. âI donât mind at all. My name is Sadie.â
âItâs a pleasure, Sadie.â I gesture behind me at my squad. âThatâs Mischiefâthe oversized housecat. The one bursting out of his own shirt is Alex, the bow guy is Nick. The deerman with the axe is Durkil, and the other deerman is Daevon.â
Sadie glances past me, taking in our questionable-looking group. Alex, of course, beams and waves like a dumbass.
âWhat would you like to know?â I ask.
She hesitates, then asks, âIs it just the five of you, or did you come from a nearby city?â
âNo cities,â I say, shaking my head. âJust a growing village. So far, we havenât seen anything bigger than that.â
âWhat about you? Are you part of one of the factions nearby?â
Sadie frowns. âNo, we werenât part of a larger group. Everyone here got dropped together after the tutorial. Mostly from the Pacific Northwest. Thereâs even a guy from Phoenix.â She pauses.
âI donât want to be rude, but you have a⊠unique group of friends.â
This girl is more direct than I am. I laugh, rubbing the back of my head. âYeah, youâre not wrong. We've had a strange journey. But honestly? This whole world is strange.â
Sadie seems ready to respond when someone else steps forward interrupting her.
Tall. Dark wavy hair. The kind of ridiculously good-looking guy that youâd see doing viral dances on social media. His shirt is burnt open on his right arm exposing a large red scar.
âHow are you all so strong?â he asks, eyes twinkling. âYou must be close to level 40, and your friends are insane!â
Sadie glares at him. âXander. Not now.â
âItâs fine,â I say, shrugging. âIâm not level 40. Weâre all around level 25. Mischiefâs probably the highest, maybe pushing 30.â
Xander shakes his head. âI donât buy it. You tore through those lizards like they were nothing. Why should we tell you anything if you wonât even be honest with us?â
Alex steps in, looming over Xander. âWhatâs your problem, man? Layton isnât lying. Iâve seen his level in our faction screen. And in case you forgot, he just saved your ass.â
Xander raises his hands but stands his ground. I have to give him credit for that.
âHey, hey,â I cut in before things can escalate. âThey have no reason to trust us yet. Things are crazy right now. Weâve just been lucky. A lot of my stats come from gaining titles. Do you know about those?â
My words are patient. My actual feelings? Annoyed. This is the second time I had saved a group and rather than showing gratitude they immediately started calling us liars.
Sadie answers before Xander can. âYes. Some of us have gotten a few. They boost stats like achievements, right?â
âExactly.â I nod. Iâm at least grateful for Sadie. She seems to be genuinely grateful. Xander just seems like an entitled asshole.
âI got lucky with some early ones. Some are even repeatable, so we⊠cheese our fights to stack them.â I leave out the part where I get a massive boost from having two classes.
Xander huffs, reluctantly cooling off. âI guess that makes sense. Itâs just⊠a lot to take in. We fought those things when they were way weaker, and it still went horribly.â
His apology does little to change my first impression, but at least itâs a start.
âDonât worry about it.â I wave it off. âBut that brings me back to my questionâhow did you end up as slaves?â
This time, Sadie doesnât hesitate.
She and the others recount their storyâhow some had ignored the tutorialâs warning, lost half their people, and barely survived the trial dungeon. They talk about finding the lizard dungeon too early, thinking they could take it, and how quickly things went south. How they surrendered. How the slavers grew stronger by fighting off endless monster waves.
By the time they finish, my chest feels tight. I thought of my parents. My dad.
He isnât stupid. He wouldnât ignore the tutorial.
âŠRight?
I shake the thought off and focus.
âThatâs rough,â I say. âLosing people like that. But⊠your decision to enter that dungeon? That was stupid.â
Sadieâs head snaps up, eyes flashing. âExcuse me?â
I had been thinking the words as Sadie spoke, but I absolutely had no intention of saying them. My eyes grow wide. I open my mouth to speak and more unintended words spill out.
âYou made a bad call. I get why you did it. But you were the leader. You risked everyoneâs lives, and you werenât strong enough to back it up.â
The words came out sharp, even to me. It takes all my effort to keep my hand from flying to my mouth. What the hell was this? I felt like Jim Carey in Liar Liar.
I hated the words as I said them, but they were my exact thoughts and I knew they needed to be said.
Sadieâs face turns scarlet burning red-hot. She takes a step and shoves a finger in my direction. âYou werenât there! You didnât bury their bodies. I did what I thought was best.â
I shake my head. âNo. You didnât. You knew it was a bad idea, but you were scared. You acted on impulse. And people died because of it.â
Something was working inside me. Itâs hard to explain, almost like how the mana moved the first time I used it. I could feel it slithering inside me.
A raw wave of emotion began emanating from Sadieâguilt, regret, self-loathing. It crashed into me like an open wound laid bare.
She carried this pain on purpose. Not because she couldnât move onâbut because she refused to.
It was like a puzzle piece clicking into place.
Warden of Judgment.
Had my class done this? Is that why I was reading her feelings?
I flick open my status, rereading the description.
Take noteâas an arbiter of judgment in your new world, your actions become justified by their very nature. Do not don this mantle lightly.
The words carry a new weight now. More⊠literal.
I suck in a slow breath and make my decision. I forgive her. The thought feels foreign to me. Logically I question my own audacity. What right did I have to forgive her? But I couldnât escape the NEED to do it.
Sheâd made a terrible call. But who wouldnât?
She carried the guilt because she thought she deserved it. But that wasnât justice. That was punishment.
And just like thatâthe sensation vanishes.
My mind clears. And I realize Iâd completely zoned out. I shake my head clear.
âCan everyone please just calm down?!â
Nick was shouting. Alex and Xander were inches from fighting. Sadie looks like she is about to explode. The freed prisoners looked like they expected all-out war.
âHEY!â I bark. âWhat the hell is going on?â
Silence.
Xander rounds on me. âAre you serious? First, you call Sadie stupid, then you just zone out like a psycho. You think just because youâre higher level, youâre better than us?â
Alex bristles, looking ready to swing. It would be a VERY bad day for Xander if Alex started swinging.
I sigh. âOkay, yeahâthatâs fair. Alex, give him some space. This is my fault.â
Alex hesitates, then backs off. I look back at the Guildians and Mischief. They are standing watching with the most casual faces Iâve ever seen. Even in this crazy moment it almost makes me laugh.
I turn back to Xander. âIâm sorry. I probably sound like a total dick right now. I donât know what came over meâI think it has something to do with my class.â
I run my hand through my hair. I must sound like a crazy person. âBut youâre right. I donât know what you went through, and it was wrong to assume.â
Xander doesnât look convinced.
Sadie, face still flushed, turns away. âIâm done here. Iâd say we owe you, but I get the feeling youâd have cleared that dungeon with or without us.â
She starts to leave.
Thenâ
âIâd like to join your faction.â
Itâs a middle-aged woman in a puffy vest.
A silence washes over the crowd. Sadie freezes in place, and I stand shocked. Nick coughs, bringing me back.
âOf course! Anyone who wants to join our faction is welcome.â I smile at the woman who spoke up. âWhatâs your name?â
âKennedy.â
âOur village is a decent walk from here, and I wonât be heading back for a few days,â I inform her.
âI canât escort you, but I can update your map. Also, if anyone else is interested, there are two other factions nearby. I donât know what state theyâre in, but now that you have the info, the choice is yours.â
I open my interface again, testing if I can actually share my updated map.
And just like thatâan option appears.
It was weirdly similar to airdropping data on a phone.
âI just made my map accessible to everyone,â I say. âYou should be able to check it in your status screen.â
The group immediately pulls up their menus.
After a beat, Xander speaks. âWhat happens if we join your faction but decide it isnât for us?â
I stare at him. My response sounds a bit confused âThen you leave?â
Xander frowns. âJust like that?â
âWhat do you think this is?â I ask, exasperated. âIâm not running some weird cult. Weâre just people, same as you.â
âWell,â Alex interjects, grinning, âtechnically, only half of us are people. Did you forget about Mischief and the Guildians?â
I palm my face. âYeah I guess If you want to be technical.â
I face the rest of the group. âLook, do whatever makes sense for you. Youâve got the map now. Your call.â
It's time to wrap things up. It had been half a day since we entered the dungeon, and we still needed to regroup with Ellison.
âAre you going to enter more dungeons?â Xander asks.
âThatâs the plan,â I shrug. âWeâre grinding levels for the next four days. We need to meet up with the rest of our group first, though.â
Xanderâs brows furrows. âWhy the hurry?â
I fold my arms. âThe worldâs now split into territories. To claim one, you have to close the dungeons inside. That usually means clearing three. Once thatâs done, you have seven days to prepare before youâre hit with three waves of raids. Weâre on day two.â
Xander blinks. âSo basically, youâre speedrunning to get stronger before the fight?â
âMore or less.â
His lips press together. âDo you think I could join you?â
Alex burst out laughing. âAre you serious? After all that shit? Besides what level are you?â
Xander crosses his arms. âIâm level 10.â
âOh my god.â Alex shakes his head. âYou probably canât even hurt the things we fight.â
âThatâs exactly why I want to go with you!â Xander pleads. âWeâre months behind you guys. If we donât catch up fast, weâre dead. Let me train with youâIâll pull my weight.â
Alex isnât wrongâXander will be dead weight in combat. Heâd need constant protection. Someone would even have to carry him just so he can keep up.
StillâŠI cringe before the words come out.
âYou can come,â So far I am far from impressed with Xander. He seems arrogant and brash. But I felt the same way about Alex when I first met him.
âBut someone will have to carry you to our next fight. Youâre too slow otherwise.â
Alexâs jaw drops. Xander looks equally shocked.
âAlex,â I say, grinning, âdo you really not remember asking the exact same thing when we met?â
Alex looks down at his feet. âI⊠of course I remember that.â
âGood. Then pass that lesson along.â I meet his gaze. âWe donât leave anyone behind whoâs willing to grow.â
Alex mulls it overâthen nods reluctantly.
âFine. But Iâm carrying him. And it WILL NOT be a pleasant ride.â
Before Xander can react, Alex hoists him up like a sack of potatoes and throws him over his massive shoulder.
âHEY! WHAT THE HELL?â Xander shouts, kicking wildly. âPUT ME DOWN, YOU BIG APE!â
I choke back a laugh.
âAll right then,â I begin walking away from the group. âAnyone heading to our villageâfind Jared and tell him I sent you.â
Weâre just about to leaveâ
âWAIT!â Sadie shouts running up.
âIâm coming too.â
I nearly trip mid-step.
âYou?â I ask, genuinely surprised. âI thought for sure you were heading to one of the other factions.â
She folds her arms. âIf Xanderâs going, so am I. But if you think for even one second that youâre carrying me, youâre out of your mind.â
âWell, youâre not fast enough,â I point to the others.
âSo youâll have to convince someone else. And the deer people donât speak english.â
Before she can argue, Mischiefâs voice enters my head.
âIâll carry her.â
I blink. This day is already full of surprises. âSeriously? Last time I asked you to carry someone, you nearly took my head off.â
Mischiefâs grin was audible in my mind.
âI like her. She really doesnât like you. I think itâs hilarious.â
I snort.
âWell, lucky you,â I nod toward my friend.
âMischief has volunteered.â
Sadie narrows her eyes. âWhy did you laugh? What did he say?!â
I smirk. âAsk him yourself. Weâve got to move.â
Hesitantly, she approaches Mischief. He lowers himself, letting her climb on.
I hear her mutter something under her breath.
Then, we take off.

2025-03-13 07:33:21 +0000 UTCYou're welcome! While patreon is annoying, ( the UI sucks on both mobile and web) it does give writers a way to connect with beta readers, which is kinda nifty.

2025-03-12 19:46:08 +0000 UTCwhat I will say is that Layton cares deeply about helping others, even when the others take advantage. Does this make him weak? I don't necessarily see it that way. Even if it does come full circle

2025-03-12 19:43:45 +0000 UTCI agree, and I think most others do too. There is a ways to go yet and Layton will continue to make naive and misguided decisions. Will they bubble to the top and blow up in his face? Who knows?
Avyck3721
2025-03-12 19:42:14 +0000 UTCIt does. And can I just say, I freaking love the contributions in the chats. It helps me be more open minded in my writing and see other peoples perspective. So thank you!

2025-03-12 19:39:48 +0000 UTCFYI for Void Autarch - the patreon app added that to my thread, not as a comment on the main thread. I did the same thing a few months ago.

2025-03-12 19:30:47 +0000 UTChaha I get this! Mischief to this point I think might not care enough to hate people. I had a feeling some people would hate this. It's an important character trait for Layton though to try and accept everyone. Will it come back around and bite him in the ass causing a massive existential crisis later? I guess we'll have to wait and find out

2025-03-12 19:30:36 +0000 UTCWhy did you allow a bunch of ungrateful garbage to join the MC ? The minute they were rescued , they put out a whole lot of attitude . If it were anyone else , they wouldn't have put up with a bunch of arrogant individuals who don't know how to be grateful . They should just fend for themselves and pay the price for their arrogance. Mischief of all people should hate their guts .

2025-03-12 19:25:01 +0000 UTCOh, yeah it's like ... in the real world, yeah humans are pretty much it, although I know a lot of pet owners and folks who work with really intelligent animals tend to consider them to be people, with their own personalities, emotions, likes, dislikes, etc. But culturally, I know most folks work only consider humans people. But like take Star Trek, lots of aliens, people from all over the galaxy, etc. or Tolkien's stuff, where you've got all those fantasy races. Lots of varieties of people, some a bit alien, some more familiar, etc. There are some additional terms with reading up on if you can find the time: Sentience, sentient, sapience, sapient, alien. One of the things I love about sf/fantasy is it gives us a way to explore really interesting topics like this. Anyhow, hope that helps!
A B
2025-03-12 17:41:41 +0000 UTCI actually did not know that. I specifically have avoided calling anything but humans people because I thought it was more accurate.
Avyck3721
2025-03-12 17:26:04 +0000 UTCThe part where they say only half of them are people reads a bit off. The word 'people' doesn't imply any particular species, and in most scifi / fantasy, I think it's pretty universal for nonhumans, aliens, etc to be considered people. Not human, but 'human' is just a biological species that is one type of people. Sorry, I hate sounding pedantic but I've seen that phrasing come up a few times in stories and it's like nails on a chalkboard to me. Like, it implies they are mere animals if they aren't people, which is obviously not the intent in that scene. Anyhow, my break is about over lol tyfc, I'm enjoying the story!

2025-03-12 17:24:30 +0000 UTCI still think the MC is... Not making the smartest decisions. ^^ This wouldn't be my decision, at all xD I would have sent them away. You can't keep carrying people..especially people with bad attitudes. You literally are bringing danger to your own people with these uncooperative people if you bring them with you. So far only plot armor saved the story/characters :)
