I'm so glad I rewatched this with you. I really needed the emotional support of sharing the journey with a friend LOL. It hits me almost as hard even when I know what's coming. It's such a beautiful anime that I've watched a few times and I never regret having rewatched it when I reach the end, but along the way I do kick myself a few times lol The letter from Kaori is such a great way to finish the relationship story. I feel she accomplished everything she needed to do "just in case" when she wrote that letter and went to sleep feeling satisfied... It's a good way to die, I suppose. She could slip away peacefully with no regrets. It also sounds like she understood the impact we have on each other and so she probably understood her life, short though it was, will continue to affect her loved ones through the ripples she left behind in them. She doesn't die thinking her life was wasted. I like to think so anyway. I love the characters in this anime so much. It will always be amongst my favourites.

Been thinking about your question concerning other anime. If you are just looking for something that hits in the feels like this one I’d recommend Violet Evergarden if you haven’t already seen it. It’s on Netflix and it’s gorgeous. Same composer as Frieren does the music. Extremely good.

Welcome to the club, Kris—we’re all bound by the shared trauma of this anime. Jokes aside, this is one of my all-time favorite shows, and I couldn’t hold back my tears watching you react to it. I might be biased as a former classical musician, but in my opinion, these last episodes are absolute masterpieces. The musical score, animation, and script are all impeccable. The way they handle such a tragic story with delicacy—never resorting to shock value with Kaori’s surgery just for reactions—is truly remarkable. And that final letter… like salt in the wound. Yet, after all the emotional highs and lows, life goes on for them. Inspiring. P.S. Now that you’ve experienced the pain, it’s only a matter of time before you make someone else suffer by recommending Your Lie in April.

It was like deep down he felt she died during his performance. That letter broke my soul. Hurt even more knowing he was only 14 going thru major loss and grief no child should have to go thru that

When she said it was always you and never watari I was like did you just shoot me

The name of the show finally makes sense now. Kaori has Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is a rare, inherited genetic condition that progressively damages the nervous system, causing movement and sensory issues. It's characterized by impaired coordination and walking, and symptoms usually appear in childhood. FA is caused by a gene defect inherited from both parents, but carriers don't have symptoms.”
