That's so cool you got to live and work in Japan! I can't believe they even did that to a teacher LOL! but honestly it's quite interesting thinking about how the translations can sway from each language and how we perceive these things a little differently because of the words used... either way, it's all so fascinating! I can't wait to finally go to Japan - hopefully soon! :D

I think it's nice, especially for schoolkids, who can be really nervous about asking someone out, to have a formal method of doing it. For the especially embarrassed it's also nice that the formal method ends with your face hidden beneath the deep bow so your blushing cheeks and teary eyes can't be seen lol It's also much more common for girls to ask out boys in Japan than it is in England, where I currently live and where I went to school as a pupil. In-between, I lived and worked in Japan as a teacher for 9 years and I've seen these askings-out happen between schoolkids and adults, and even received a few myself from ladies aged 16-30+ so I can tell you that, as the recipient it's also good that the bow also means they can't see your face while you try to figure out an appropriate response, especially to a 16 year-old girl asking out her teacher! lol * I've never understood why the translations in anime always use that word, "confession". I realise the translations are done for an American audience so I guess it's an American term. Does anyone know why telling someone you like them is called a "confession"? It doesn't make sense to me, but I can be very dim at times lol
