THIS!! it's a very cultural thing. I don't think anyone in the show views her as ugly based on her face etc. but mannerism wise and even body wise for this show she is NOT what most Korean men would go for or idolize and THATS the point. Western standards don't really work for this show, it is very centered around Korea's understanding of what "feminine" is defined as which is more so the girls from the gymnastic club. (idols etc)

2025-03-15 20:52:29 +0000 UTCI don't think she's meant to be seen as "plain". I think she's just meant to be seen as the opposite of what a typical ideal hottie is and that Korean men dislike that. I think people is supposed to understand that yes she has a pretty face but her attitude, style, and mannerisms aren't and that's what makes her "not pretty" by their standards.

The convo at the end makes sense. I remember watching and thinking that she is so pretty and "unusual" looking that I knew she had to have been a model but for some reason I'm supposed to be thinking that she is plain. That being said, I think that Chinese dramas tend to do the "average" looking girl thing better. I have definitely seen more Cdramas with women who I can definitely believe would be considered average.

The issue is that the beauty standard in Korea for a female to be skinny, to be delicate, to be obedient and look pretty. Kim bok joo represents the contrast of that, she doesnโt have the petite figure, sheโs strong, she fights back and she doesnโt care how she appears to others.
