Susan's into tying people up. Got it.

Commentary

I chose to draw this storyline in my standard drawing style with normal proportions, and found I didn't like the idea of Susan running around and killing bandits without the extra layer of absurdity added by more cartoonish proportions.

Fortunately, I feel this is in character for her, and it gave me the opportunity to comment on something else.

"Should Be"

People often talk about what they want in a game or story without considering the full ramifications of those things.

Which is understandable and fine. We're casually talking about things we think we'd like to have, not doing homework assignments about game mechanics or story structure.

Of course, there are people who make lengthy videos talking about these things, and they probably should consider that stuff, but I digress.

THE POINT IS, a lot of the stuff we think we want could, in practice, actually be terrible and not fun.

Which, as I've said, isn't really a big deal until you make an hour long video in which you endlessly berate the creators and insult their intelligence while suggesting things that wouldn't actually work, PERSON WHO DOES THAT!

(I was going to jokingly end that sentence with some random name, but given how many people make critique videos these days, there's probably no name I could go with that wouldn't be linked to an actual person.)

Haven't played it myself, but doesn't Red Dead Redemption let you hogtie people?

"Susan's into tying people up." I won't comment on this other to say I am ok with that.

Her breasts appear to be shrinking :(

chris

her only choices are to leave them tied up until they starve, release them to cause problems for everyone else, or ....deal with the problem finally.

It's worth noting that, unless Susan can lead the tied up bandits to someone in authority

The original "Dishonored" game has the option of doing a no-kill run. In fact there are benefits in the game for doing it that way. It's really difficult to do though.

It would be a nice mechanic in something like the "Batman: Arkham" game series, or in Hitman, where enemies can revive their fallen comrades. Take the extra time to tie them up, and enemies then have to take the time to untie them - letting you ambush them. Or, untied enemies sometimes escape before the police arrive, so tying up all the enemies (or, at least, all the major ones) leads to hidden bonuses later on?

the Metro series games (which are more stealth/shooter hybrids) had the option for knocking out opponents in melee rather than killing them with your knife. in the 2nd game, Last Light, you could even do a full no-kill run. (it is hard as heck but doable. sadly the 1st game has a few levels where you have to kill to progress. :( )

There are a few things in some games where they tease at the ability to do things, but won't let the player go through with it that I don't care for. Let me Join Team Rocket so I can take over from the inside! Stupid Nugget Bridge... Then there's things like the Pacify ability in Fallout 4: You successfully tell them to calm down, but then you turn around & the npc starts shooting or stabbing you again! Then the ability doesn't work anymore cause you already used it on them, so you have to kill them now. The scene with the drug dealer & the diner is my favorite cause you can either kill 1 party, both parties or resolve everything peacefully.

Actually, while it’s not exactly an RPG, ‘Oddworld Strangers Wrath’ has the ability to either tie up or kill enemies for bounties, and it’s an action/FPS/adventure game.

Kendra Kirai

lol they both have very valid points

One of the things they talked about a lot in the Leverage Director’s Commentary was how hard clearing names through legal was. People’s names were bad enough, but titles for fictional porn films or slogans for a healthcare company? Impossible. The solution ended up being to go very generic, since that was non-memorable enough that no actual company would use it.

Viktor

I gotta admit, I'm really enjoying this story arc.

Let Susan have her fun

To be fair, tying people up seemed to work in Red Dead Redemption. (Don't know if it's still in RDR2, but given the other sacrifices that game made to pacing, I assume it's still in there)

I wonder if Susan's going to level up again on the next page...

coredumperror

"Susan's into tying people up" Aw geez, thirsty lesbians on Tumblr going "step on me Susan!" in 5, 4, 3...

Reminds me of someone talking about Undertale. They pointed out that a lot of ACT commands are mean-spirited, so you can do a pacifist run by being a complete and utter jerk to all the (non-boss) monsters in the game, and it's still valid as the "good" ending. The game doesn't even call you out on it, iirc.

Fenrir

Can't remember the comic strip, short run long ago, but the pacifist protagonist got out of a "kill or be killed" situation by blackmailing the cartoonist. I think his closing comment was "Being a pacifist opens up a whole new world of alternate solutions."
