L is personally my fav character from the moment he was introduced because I seriously disliked Light when I first started watching this. Basically despite the story following him as soon as he said he wanted to be "god" I thought of him as a villain who should be taken down. When L showed up and pulled Light down a few pegs with the epic music playing and the challenge in his voice towards Light as I disliked Light a lot at that point I was so happy that this was happening and immidiantly warmed to L despite not knowing much about him. I tend to get attached to characters quite quickly if I can relate to them in some way or agree with a huge important action they've taken or a important opinion. I was like you hate and want to stop Light to and possibly have the means to do so? Cool! You're now a favourite character! Haha. Though I can see why you think the way you do, its your opinion and I understand that x

To answer your biggest question "are we supposed to like this guy" i personally never liked like Light. The story is just told from his point of view. And the thing about L being able to pull assumptions out of his ass is because L and Light are practically super geniuses. I mean light is the number 1 student in Japan. And L is the greatest detective in the world. So I dont think its far fetched to assume that he is pretty freaking smart you know. L is the real hero. I mean he is trying to catch a person who's killed 1000's of people. I dont like Lights god complex. But the chess game between the two are 100× smarter then everyone else. L can determine that kira can 1) kill from a distance. He knows this because kira couldnt have been there at the conference. 2) he determines kira can control actions before death because after 1000's of people die from heart attacks on prison these certain people that kira killed left notes that only kira would know. So really he just puts two and two together. Light has one goal to rid the world of evil. Anyone that opposes him he sees has evil. Its his god complex. Everyone is just a tool to light.
