I know you've finished this already, but I don't think it makes Veronica dumb to get a DNA test done. We know Duncan learned something from his mother that made him dump Veronica and we know the sister did a 180 on her relationship with her brother when she was told what her mother told Duncan, too. It makes perfect sense to assume that was what the big secret behind her breakup was. Her mother also was clearly disturbed in the flashback when Veronica told her she was dating Duncan.

2020-10-16 16:08:59 +0000 UTCWhat I believe that you fail to understand is that this series was never about the cases. This series was all about the characters and their interactions. If you didn’t enjoy that part of the series, then you wouldn’t enjoy the series. The cases were only the scaffolding around which the characters interacted. So when you are picking apart the cases, it sounds like you just don’t get it.

I'm not saying this is a great episode or that you are necessarily wrong about anything, I'm just going to sum up some things I see in this episode. Starting with the over arching mystery. Veronica learned of the possibility that Jake Kane was her father and after calming down she goes into detective mode. She uses newly learned information to consider how that would explain some unsolved elements- whether mom left town because someone was threatening Veronica's life, why and how they would do that, what private information Keith might have had to make him go after Jake Kane for Lily's murder. So. She investigates, tries to figure out who was threatening her mom. That doesn't mean she believes thats the truth, only that it could provide and explanation for unknowns. It's clear that she still has a reasonable level of doubt because along side her investigating, she does pursue a dna test. Also, though it's maybe not be super noticeable yet, Veronica's cynicism sometimes means she jumps to conclusions-like her tendency to accuse Logan of being the culprit even though it hasn't been him (1x2, 1x5). And her investigations lead to results, the head of security at Kane software has been following her and sending pictures of her with a target sight to her mother. It makes more sense that that is because Jake Kane is trying to avoid Veronica finding out and suing / making a scandal because she is his daughter than any other explanation we have. Why else would that have happened? As to her mother not stopping them from dating, we did get and early flashback(1x5?) where her mother, Lianne, is cooking and asking her about boys. When Veronica mentions Duncan, Lianne is visibly uncomfortable, but the flashback is interrupted. That's all we really know about Lianne's feelings about Duncan and Veronica. Now to get into the case of the week. The cult really wasn't a cult, they were just a collective with hippie principles literally growing poinsettias to sell at Christmas. When Veronica said, "you don't want me to work in your ganja field" She means that she also assumed they were growing weed and now that she knows it's poinsettias-along with the other info she's collected- she believes they aren't doing anything wrong. The way I track the metaphorical significance of this story is that: Veronica is actively struggling with the idea that Keith is not her biological father, and through the experience of both Casey and Rain, she is reminded that sometimes your family isn't who you are related to but the family that you create. This combined with Veronica's previous statement about her parents, "The good guy is the one who stays." Makes not looking at the results feel in character that she would choose to accept Keith as her father and an even sweeter gesture given her tendency to want to know all the secrets. Further Keith's behavior this episode also demonstrates his fathering, he is trying to take good care of his kid. He remembered all those years she wanted a waterbed and finally found a way to get it for her (ie he's been her father all these years), he cares about her safety( in episode one he told her to take Backup and she did, that's the name of their dog) cults are seriously dangerous because of the possibility of a hostage situation if she got caught or if there was a raid, and finally he is a former sheriff and current detective he understands that sometimes doing the job, following the law or the clients request, is not morally pure and he is trying to make a better life for his own daughter by getting paid for the job he was hired for- remember most of their job is confirming people's suspicion their spouse is cheating or catching bail-jumpers regardless of the effect it has on the people or the circumstances that put those people in that position. I think those factors explain his initial reaction, but with more reflection and information-especially about Rain's circumstance- he decides not to report the collective. But they are still technically committing a crime by contributing to the delinquency of a minor, so his instinct to report and allow that to benefit his ability to care for his child ( who lost so much, because of his actions as sheriff ) is in character. Woo! I hope that's helpful insight and not obnoxious or anything. Just wanted to share the connections I see in it. Still not a favorite episode.

2019-05-12 23:30:03 +0000 UTCOne could argue, that she's still a sixteen year old girl and not yet a fully formed adult. It's usually around these years that adopted children start searching for their birth parents because they question who they are as people and assume that knowing your birth parents makes you understand yourself better (which I personally doubt, but many think so). As for her relationship with Duncan, she did vomit out of the car when she evaluated this consequence but since she's no longer seeing him romantically and never slept with him, it's in the "manageable" emotional area.
