Faith was awesome in that scene. She also tried to talk to Willow and Xander, but they were all caught up in their guilty feels. Granted, it was crass, but Scott Hope is the worst, and Buffy's "actual" friends who created this situation in the first place, did nothing to stand up for their Buffy. Go Faith!

I have to disagree with you about Faith being a bitch with her behavior at the dance. Well, it was a bitchy thing to do, but I got the feeling that she saw the guy who just dumped Buffy with another girl so quickly after dumping her, and she decided to get some revenge on behalf of her sister slayer. Just my interpretation. Might not be nicest approach, but Faith tends to strike me as a darker shade of slayer than Buffy.

Sorry to insist, but I just showed you how the point was made in this episode about Buffy feelings way beforehand. It’s not a matter of disagreeing with your opinion but of you, in this instance, dismissing facts that contradict your opinion. By the way I gave this episode a 7 as well.

I'm really surprised by some of these comments lol. I never took from this reaction that you didn't like the show and I actually thought you had some valid points. Although Buffy and Cordelia both had reasons to want to be homecoming queen, their behaviour was still wrong which is why neither of them won in the end, neither deserved it. Willow and Xander may have been unpopular in this but we've been dancing around this subject since season 1, we were always going to have to delve into it at some stage and it does make good drama and although he's a bit of a "meh" character, I'm actually with you on not hating Scott Hope. I don't blame Buffy for him dumping her either, after all there's so much she can't tell him about her so I do feel for her there but there's only so many times a guy can put himself out there and be rejected before he gives up and at the beginning of the episode, I think when she ditches him then after he's just asked her to go to the dance, that's the last straw with him. As for bringing another date, we don't know he planned that, I actually assumed he brought someone else who he felt actually wanted to go with him and he was entitled to do that, after all he and Buffy weren't serious and he at least did the right thing by confronting her and telling her the truth which is something Willow and Xander never did and finally what Faith did was wrong although I still like why she did it. Buffy is her only friend and in her eyes she's looking out for her so for that reason I think it's kind of sweet even though it wasn't entirely fair on Scott. Sorry for going on a bit but I really enjoyed this reaction from you and I love hearing all the different opinions. This show is a great topic for discussion for anyone but most of the time there is no right or wrong. It's not that kind of show

This is true--I am always surprised! I watch a bunch of reactors, and this is the only channel where I heard a full-throated defense of Xander's perspective in "Becoming" or any sympathy for Scott Hope. It's refreshing to see a totally different angle!

Regarding Faith, I had never really thought about it from that perspective. That is a valid perspective and point and we don't really know enough to make the determination really of who the bad guy was in the scenario.

Yea I may have been harsher on the Episode becuase I dont like petty drama that does not really matter. Both of them took extremely low blows in the Episode. I guess Karma is a big part of the Episode which I didnt think about when watching. Yea I fully am not on board with them cheating on Oz or Cordelia. When I said I liked it I meant I like the drama and what I can only assume will be great acting that is going to come from it.

I liked the situation becuase of the drama and trouble it presents. I don't like what they are doing to Oz and Cordelia. I would not applaud them cheating. I dont want them to be together at the expense of Oz and Cordelia, I just meant I liked the drama it brought to the show and I'm interested to see what happens.

Me giving a Thumbs up to Scott honestly didnt have much to do with Buffy. I just liked the fact that he could tell she just wasnt that into him and she had her mind in other things and wouldnt tell him about it. I was happy for the show becuase it was a story beat that they didnt build on and I couldnt care less about them as a couple. Even the invite to the ball was odd and neither seem to really want to go together if neither gave indications of asking until the friends brought it up. Now the Faith situation I just think this is Faith's character. Scott broke up with Buffy becuase he was not enjoying his time with her and he took someone else to the dance and Faith went out of her way to ruin his night and embarrass him. It is never said Scott is a bad guy and even after they break up in the Episode Scott and Buffy have a moment where Scott says Buffy you have my vote showing that he still likes Buffy but knows they wont work out. I didnt look at what Faith did as looking out for her friend. Also in plenty of shows when people break up around a dance they have a friend who says they will go with them to cheer them up. Actually seems like something Buffy or Willow would do for Xander if Cordelia broke up with him. We dont know who the girl was and I didnt read it as he was just there to rub it in Buffy's face. It's his homecoming as well and he should be allowed to go and have fun as well. Faith is just a wild card and that's why she did it. She doesn't really have manners when it comes to some things. Well at least that's how I took that but I think no one else did.

In this Episode I dont side with her for most if it. I dont really side with anyone that is petty over things I dont think should matter in the grand scheme of things. I look at it the way Willow looked at it and said "Cordelia needs it more". This has been Cordelias character from the start. Of course she would want it that badly and it wasnt until Cordelia said she has a lot of pressure with the Homecoming Queen contest that Buffy decided she wanted it. That's how I understood it. Later on I got why she would want it but that was never established until that point. At no other point did I get the sense that she wanted it for good reasons. But I know a lot of people love the Episode and I'm in the minority on this one at thinking it was just kind of ok-good.

I didnt think about it like that, but it makes sense that taking two things away that connected her to her non slayer life would set her off. I took the Faith thing as well guys suck kind of scenario. I'm glad that Scott broke up with Buffy because she is not at all into the relationship and wont really talk with him about her feelings. At the same time they didnt build them enough for me to care about it as a relationship. I didnt look at it like Scott wanted another girl so he dumped Buffy but I guess that would make sense since he had a date to the dance a day or two later.

Yea I got the aspect of why she wanted it later just not the reason why she first decided to go after it. The Episode was really centered on pettiness which I mentioned I'm not a fan of in any show but I understand its teens so it makes sense for Buffy to have that about her sometimes. As for Cordelia saying she would tell Buffy about picture day I get it but at the same time Buffy could have figured it out on her own. I mean she been back for a bit and yes she Slays but i more feel like the Angel stuff is what stopped her from paying attention to school.

If you're not really into Buffy by now I'm not sure you will be. It's an older show and has some flaws. But this far in most people know how they're going to feel about the show.

This is one of those episodes that I've enjoyed the more I've watched it. It can be difficult watching for the first time as Buffy comes across as extremely petty in this (so is Cordelia but it's not unusual for her) but the more times you watch this, you start to appreciate the karma that's at play. Like when Buffy tells Angel about Scott, he really didn't need to hear about her new boyfriend. It was so inconsiderate of her but then it cuts straight to the scene where Scott dumps her and the whole homecoming thing I enjoyed but it only worked because neither of them won in the end. I thought the slayer fest competition was a good parallel to what was going on at school. This is the first time we've met the Mayor. He's a very unique but interesting character. I hope you like him and finally Xander and Willow, they pick the worst time to confess their feelings, they were not popular with fans at this time. Overall, I'd give this a 7. It's not one of the great ones but I still enjoy it

It’s funny that the aspect you liked the most in this episode is one of the things that the fan of this show generally dislike the most in the whole show. In season 1 and at the start of season 2 when Willow had a crush on Xander, people were routing for this relationship. But then Xander started dating Cordelia and Oz came into the picture and this became the last thing anyone wanted.

I know that you don’t empathize with Buffy but I was nevertheless surprised by your enthusiastic thumb up for Scott Hope dumping her after inviting her to the ball and putting the blame on her for the break-up.............. And calling Faith a bitch for looking out for her friend? The fact that he shows up a few days after with another girl at the dance is shitty. Faith was right.

You said that it’s hard for you to be on Buffy’s side. I’ve noticed that it has been true throughout your reaction to this show. That’s unfortunate because the show is pretty much about her journey to become an adult. As other people have already commented, it’s not about the title or taking something from Cordelia. From the start of the episode, almost the first line, we see that Cordelia is competing the be Homecoming queen, and Buffy isn’t interested in “taking it from her”. Instead it’s the feeling that she will never get to be a normal teenage girl because of all the things being the slayer is taking from her. This narrative is explored consistently during the whole show and within this episode arc. First Buffy trying to move on from Angel and being with Scott Hope only to be dumped by him just after “inviting” her to the ball. By the way when she tells Angel that she is seeing someone, it’s not random or to hurt him it’s to convince him (and herself) that she is returning to a kind of normalcy. Second the realization that the teacher she thought she made an impression on for something not Slayer related never noticed her. Finally the yearbook picture incident, that she misses because she has to train instead of doing what normal senior high school students do. As she says “am I invisible?” It’s normal that she gets mad at Cordelia and decides to compete for the title. It’s partly to get back at Cordelia but mostly to be remembered as something else than the slayer. It’s evident from the beginning when she talks about it with Xander, Oz and Willow and she clarifies it further wit Cordelia.

"Knock at the door, knock at the door!" You and all the rest of us, buddy. Buffy may not have wanted the Homecoming title all the time, but realizing she wouldn't even be in the yearbook, along with Scott dumping her and thus taking the last aspect of her non-Slayer life away kind of pushed her over the teenage edge. You, of course, have never been a 17 year old girl. They're kinda crazy at times. ;) I love the Faith/Scott interaction because it shows that she actually does care about Buffy. I'm of the opinion that Scott just wanted to be with another girl so he made some lame excuse to dump Buffy. Again, teenagers. Scott is lame.

Buffy's whole thing is she wants somewhat of a normal life. She doesn't want being a slayer be the only thing she is, it's a running theme through the show from the very beginning. Being homecoming queen is considered something normal so she latches onto it when she realizes that few seem to notice she even exists at Sunnydale High--her teachers and most of the students. It had little to do with Cordelia, directly, she just sparked the need in her to not feel almost invisible and to have some kind of life outside slaying. If you remember in Dead Man's Party, few seem to know who the party was for even though it was in her house. Other episodes also touch on it in previous seasons. Besides Cordelia DID tell the group that she would tell her about picture day. She accepted the responsibility for it when she told them she'd tell Buffy so it is on her, completely her bad.
