2020-09-05 16:56:58 +0000 UTCThe reason Hannibal did the copycat: Will was having trouble seeing some aspects of the Shrike killer. He says so in Jack's office. After Will storms out, Hannibal says "I think I can help good Will see his face", followed by the scene with the body on the stag's head. She was treated the opposite of the other girls (on purpose by Hannibal) so Will could see- and Will, right in the field with the body, starts listing off new characteristics of the Shrike because it DID help him. As Will says, the scene was practically gift wrapped: "It's like he had to show me the negative so I could see the positive". Yes I know I'm a year late, but I love Hannibal. It is very nuanced though and takes patience and a strong attention span- not everyone has that. Not to say it doesn't keep you interested.

It got 7 seasons, was universally praised and lauded by critics, and won every award possible, and is still incredibly popular twenty years later, with ongoing popular podcasts hosted by fans and cast and occasional cast reunions. The second best network television series ever made is Hannibal. Almost no one noticed it.

2019-08-26 09:47:36 +0000 UTCI'm really glad to see you enjoyed the pilot, and how much notice you took of the stylistic choices. Bryan Fuller's series are always so amazing visually. I love how this one is pretty much nothing like Pushing Daisies in terms of visuals, but it's similarly very artistic.

2019-06-23 01:09:09 +0000 UTCMy personal interpretation upon first watching the pilot was that Hannibal was fascinated with Will, and did the copycat murder as a way to assess him, and called Dobbs (Dodd? I don't remember lol) for the same reason: he wanted to watch Will under extreme circumstances. I never felt like there was any doubt that the sausage in his egg scramble was human (but again, it was just my interpretation). The series takes place in this sort of nebulous time/space, because the orginal story was written in the 70's/80's, but has been modernized and occurs before Silence of the Lambs. I think they reason they didn't really bother to explain Hannibal himself simply comes down to the fact that he's such an iconic character, "Hannibal the Cannibal" etc., so we as the audience go into it knowing a lot of his motivations and back story, or at least his personality and methods. So I loved that they spent the bulk of the episode focused on Will, to establish his character so deeply - I 100% agree that this is a near-perfect pilot, that elegantly lays out the groundwork for the series. Totally enjoyed this reaction, and look forward to episode two (and will be there in a heartbeat if/when you watch the rest!).
