I really enjoy this episode, even after multiple re-watches, and having seen all of the show that gets epically awesome. I think it's one of the best of season 1, alongside Angel and Prophecy Girl, and definitely the best monster of the week episode. Though I do love Witch as well ( 1x03). I'd give it a 7.5 though, just cos of comparing it to much better later episodes. I agree it would've been nice to see another of Willow's fears, especially since we saw her stage fright in the last episode. I like that the episode deals with child abuse. The first time I watched this, I figured out that Billy's monster represented the person who had beaten him into a coma, at about the same time you did. I was guessing father too, since abuse within the family is unfortunately pretty common - which interestingly Xander is well aware of. I like that the guy got arrested and locked up, since there rarely consequences, just hope he was found guilty. The thing with the monster having a club for a hand - means I've always assumed that the coach beat him with a baseball bat, which is horrific. On the swastika thing, just after the tarantula attack, Xander says that he's not so scared of spiders, but would be scared of Nazi's crawling all over his face. So I think maybe Xander sometimes has nightmares of Nazi's. Then we get his nightmare scene with the clown, where there are swastikas on the wall. I think that is just the kind of thing where dreams make no sense and are not logical, and also bleed together, and aspects of different fears being in the same dream. And maybe a misdirect so we don’t expect the clown? Buffy’s dream of her father rejecting her and being the cause of the divorce is awful, and quite emotionally powerful. I find it more affecting than the fears related to her slayer calling of dying or being turned into a vamp.

I also don’t get how exactly Billy’s nightmare affected Teresa’s nightmare, or why nazi signs occurred in Xander’s. Maybe there was a deleted scene? But yeah, it’s one of the better episodes of season 1. Great reaction! :)

2018-12-20 05:16:03 +0000 UTCI think the "Lucky 19" monster was something abused kids do a lot of. Usually with kids much younger they can turn the person who is abusing them into a monster. It's one of the reasons people like my mom got away with being a child abuser for years with no one suspecting.
