I loved this movie, my second favorite I believe, it's a bit much darker that the other, Harry has grown as much as Hermione and Ron, we see them less passive. The next one is... Something, it's a particular one if I might say...

2020-04-21 04:24:55 +0000 UTCThis is very prettily filmed, but I'll never forgive the screenwriter for giving one of Ron's defining moments to Hermione (when he stands up on his broken leg and tells Sirius that he'll have to go through him to get to Harry; that was NOT Hermione's line, and re-assigning it really undermines Ron's character). I also regretted the omissions and changes in the back story. They watched from a distance and couldn't distinguish the axe hitting buckbeak or the pumpkin we saw later. It was also the pumpkin the first time but Harry, Ron and Hermoine thought buckbeak died. This is the reason they explicitly showed the axe swing at the pumpkin.

I thought the second one was better than the first but only slightly because of how convenient the plot keeps on keeping on. I want to see more from the big-time characters like Snape and Dumbledore (since they're the only ones outside of the main 3 kids that I know) since they haven't done jackshit in the first 2. I hope as the actors get older the movies get more mature because the first two just felt like Disneyland rides with a paper-thin plot. Can't wait to watch this one though as I am fairly intrigued on where these characters go. Hermione is my queen though, I figure if she was the main character there would be no movie because she would have figured everything out with a flick of the wand!

In the UK you start secondary/high school, which is the main school where you prepare for then start GCSEs, at age 11. Hogwarts is basically high school. A couple of years preparation, then into choosing which qualifications you want and doing just those for a couple of years, ending in exams.

2020-04-08 01:32:27 +0000 UTCYep, Snape teaches Potions as written above. Absolutely love this movie, and I agree with you a TV series would be great to follow in parallel. It would've even been great for this adaptation tbh. They left out some explanations in the movie, but it would also allow for more character development and adding some missing moments from the books, like the whole Quidditch season - which was Harry's captain's last as he was in his 7th year, so he had a lot of pressure to win the Cup. This whole storyline was really cool but not kept for time constraints obviously. Actually most of the Quidditch scenes from this movie and onwards are removed. Still, even though there would've been content enough for a series, and especially the next movies/books as the books were more than twice the size of this one, all that said I loved this movie, one of my favourites of the series.

They didn't know who'd sent it, and Hermione went to tell prof. McGonagall. They took the broom to test it for hexes, since they suspected it might be a cursed broom from Sirius. At the end of the book it's revealed it was Sirius who'd sent it, but of course it was perfectly safe.

I thought her interpretation of Hermione was good in the first two films, but this movie is the one where she starts acting more like Emma and less like Hermione. I’ve always thought she was too attractive for the role tbh. Hermione isn’t ugly, but she isn’t supposed to be super pretty like Emma is.

2020-04-07 15:16:07 +0000 UTCI love that we start to get a bit of Rupert Grint's (Ron) comedic abilities in this movie. Catching the Snitch in Quidditch gives you 150 points and ends the game. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the team that catches it will win. There are two instances in the book where the losing team's Seeker catches the Snitch. So if a team has a great offense they can run up the score and still win, even if the other team manages to catch the Snitch in the end. Make sense? Also, Emma Watson is highly overrated as an actress. Good Lord, she's awful. My opinion, of course.

2020-04-07 15:14:40 +0000 UTCWhile I do love this movie and it's on kind of a shared top spot with the 1st and 2nd movie, it's not perfect. They left out too much from the end, they didn't explain anything well. The cinematography is beautiful though. I still wish Alfonso Cuarón had directed the rest of the movies as well. I'm 100% sure he would've done a better job than Mike Newell (movie 4) or David Yates (5-8). - In the very first scene, they already made a mistake. Harry's not allowed to use any kind of mafic outside Hogwarts. Harry used Lumos (no such thing as lumos maxima in the books) in the SECOND book already. It's supposed to be like a flashlight. "Lumos" to light your wand up, "Nox" to put it out. - I don't like how they filmed Marge inflating, mainly because they made the scene so comedic with the music and the buttons hitting Dudley etc. In the book it happened fast and it was scary for the Dursleys, Harry ran to get his stuff and left, leaving the Dursleys to deal with Marge. - If you missed it, Marge didn't die. People from the Ministry returned her back to her original form and tampered with her memory. There are people whose job it is to do this kind of stuff so that Muggles stay unaware of magic. - If you wanna get to know Lily and James Potter better, read the books! :D - They should've made Sirius in his dog form bigger. I understand why they didn't, but he's really scary large. - The Jamaican shrunken head is also a movie-only thing, although JK said she wished she'd come up with the idea herself. Let's just say I'm glad she didn't. The double-decker scene is not in the books, but it was a fun magical thing to add. - The recasting of Tom, the owner of Leaky Cauldron, is absolutely WILD. I don't understand why they would do that. Tom is a regular man who owns a business, really, why the f did they do him dirty like that? - There's a great meme of Mrs. Weasley running to catch Ron on the train window, yelling "Ron! Ron! Don't forget the plot twist!" :D - I love how the Dementors look in this one. Super cool and scary. They used water to get the creepy flow of the cloak right and it worked really well in my opinion. Buuuut then later in the series they used only CGI I think and changed the desing a bit. - So yes, they recast Dumbledore. Michael Gambon does quite well in this movie, but in the next one he's absolutely awful, and the character was never the same. He's very different book vs. movies. - Dumbedore very much dislikes the Dementors, he didn't want them guarding the school. The Ministry insisted, so Dumbledore agreed to have them guard the borders but not enter school grounds. By the way, the Dementors don't actually fly, only hover/float like an inch above the ground. In the movies they fly. - Also, recasting of the Fat Lady. Funny you should mention the "knight back there", he has a bigger role in the books but not really in the films. But I'm glad they didn't completely forget about him. - The jelly beans were changed a bit in this scene, maybe they just invented a new kind of magical candy. But the actual beans are called Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans. Harry tasted them on the train in the 1st movie. - They made Sybil Trelawney (divination teacher) very silly in all of the movies, just for comic relief I guess. - I absolutely love how they brought Buckbeak the Hippogriff to life, the overall design, the sounds he makes, everything. You can see him straightening his feathers in the background, they even had him poop on screen. Glad you noticed that haha. They could've just used CGI but I'm so glad they didn't. It's one of the best things in the movies. - The flight scene is maybe my absolute favorite in all the movies, even though it's a bit longer compared to the book. Rare thing for me but I actually prefer the movie scene, it's beautiful. - As Hermione rushes in to say that Malfoy has to be taken to the hospital wing, you can actually see the Time Turner on her neck. 43:20 in the reaction. - They effed up this scene. Lupin said later he jumped in front of Harry because he thought the Boggart would take Voldemort's form, and didn't wanna cause panic. In the book this makes sense because Harry didn't get to do anything, but in the movie he was already there and the Boggart already turned into a Dementor and Lupin didn't really need to jump in. The other thing is, in this scene it's clear that Lupin's Boggart is a moon, there's clouds and everything. Kinda ruins the mystery. In the book people thought it was a crystal ball, cause it was just a silvery orb. - Poor Neville has to face is WORST fear almost every day at school, in the books Snape really is cruel towards Neville and others. - I wanna add that this is the only movie where they got Harry's hair right. It's messy and ruffled. I love it :D - The scene on the bridge is not in the books, but it is a lovely scene. We don't get enough of these so I'm glad they kept it in. - Here's an example of how they changed Ron's character from the books: Snape calls Hermione an insufferable know-it-all, and Ron comments "he's got a point, you know". What really happened in the books is Ron got really angry, confronted Snape and got detention. They very rarely show Ron's good, loyal side in the movies and make him the stupid comic relief who eats 24/7. - Correction to how Quidditch works: the Snitch ends the game but doesn't guarantee a win, only +150 points. That might be what you meant though. The snitch is not a bird, just a tiny ball with wings, but acutally a very long time ago when Quidditch was invented, they used a tiny live bird instead called the Snidget. I'm very glad that changed. - Yes the Hogsmeade weekends are a thing for 3rd years and up. There are a few/several Hogsmeade weekends per year, but not every week. I'll continue with my novel later :D

2020-04-07 13:17:34 +0000 UTC@Steven to anwser a few of your questions: The hotel at the beginning was the upstairs of the Leaky Cauldron, which is the entrance pub to Diagon Alley. Ron and Hermione were they for their yearly shopping for new books and school stuff. The Dementor affect everyone. It's just that when they suck on your happiness what remains is much worse for Harry than for anyone else due to his past. As to why Lupin was mad at Harry regarding the map, Doug explained it nicely above as well as Hermione's issue with the Divination class.

2020-04-07 12:23:38 +0000 UTCHere's what I think is the most important missing part of the movie compared to the book: Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Remus Lupin was already a werewolf when he was a student at Hogwarts. Whenever he became a werewolf he was hidden in the Shrieking Shack (when the legends it being haunted started) and the entrance was secured by planting a certain Whomping Willow so that no one ran into Wolf-Lupin by accident. His friends, Sirius, James and Peter could not miss that Remus was gone once a month and when they learned about his being a werewolf, they learned to become Animagi (just like Prof. McGonagall can become a cat) because when they are in animal form, Lupin is no danger to them. They are also the creators of the Marauder's map - that's why Lupin and Sirius immediately knew what the parchment was. They used their nicknames, Mooney for Remus, Wormtail for Peter, Padfoot for Sirius and James - who would turn into a stag/deer - was Prongs. In the book the Patronus charm also isn't an energy shield. It's a spirit animal and for Harry it turns into a stag that races across the lake and drives the dementors away. As you can see in the book these places, characters and objects tie much tighter together than the movie makes it clear.

It’s explained in the books, but they leave it out in the films. Sirius, James, Peter and Lupin are the ones who created the map back when they were at Hogwarts. The names on the map correspond with their animal forms (dog, stag, rat and werewolf). Wizards who can transform into animals (animagi) are registered with the ministry and are monitored. That’s why the ministry had no idea how Black escaped-they didn’t know he could transform. Not everyone can do it, it’s very complicated and tricky magic. The marauders spent months perfecting it. That’s why Lupin knew about the map and how it worked without Harry telling him. He created it. Besides that, this movie is great. I love the atmosphere and the shots of the Whomping Willow.

But to be fair I'm just trying to clarify some things you asked about and also just gushing because I really enjoy this film. The feather at the end is from Buckbeak, so Sirius sent Harry that broom. Something explained in the books but never the movies but is really cool: The names on the map-Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs- are the nicknames of its creators Lupin, Peter, Sirius, and James. These are the names they gave themselves based on their animal forms, Werewolf, Rat, Dog, Stag. Learning to turn into and back from an animal form is extremely rare and difficult, so few are the people that can do it that there is actually a list that you are put on when you learn to turn into one, the ministry of magic has a registry of people who can do so. The three friends of Lupin however learned to change in secret, and were never registered. That's why the thought that Peter could have survived the explosion twelve years ago, and that Sirius could be evading capture by shapeshifting never crosses the minds of the authorities. The reason the friends tried to learn how to change was to help Lupin out with his transitions. James and Sirius together could usually keep Lupin under control in their animal forms and keep him company.

2020-04-07 08:52:59 +0000 UTCThe book Harry's reading with light from his wand in the opening scene shows the words of the spell he's using. That's why the light isn't staying on constantly, he was learning that spell in that moment, which is why later in the movie when he's mastered it, it doesn't go out. Lupin WAS under the impression that Sirius Black was evil when he yelled at Harry about the map, he only realized Sirius was innocent when Harry mentioned the map showed Peter Pettigrew. Similarly there are a couple of other things you asked throughout that I'm forgetting now but were covered in the movie, Hermione had made faces whenever the divination teacher talked in class, she clearly wasn't fond of that type of magic at all, it just didn't click for her and she felt the teacher was a bit of a fraud... Sirius was supposed to have killed 12 muggles in the moment that he blew up Peter, we now know he has killed no one and the muggle deaths must have been Peter's doing. Sirius getting out of Azkaban is a bit more intricately explained in the books, but for the movies sake just know that him turning into a dog is a big part of how he gets around unseen. The time travel thing, is very interesting. This version of time travel assumes that things are CONCRETE. If the first time around Lupin turned into a werewolf, no amount of Time Turning could change that. What happened, happened. For example, if Future Harry had wanted to run and grab the rat before the reveal, he somehow would fail to do so, since it never happened that way. Maybe he would trip and get knocked out, or Hermione would stun him, or he'd change his mind, Idk. But no matter what he would not be able to CHANGE anything. That does not mean it's not worth time turning, you can't change any of the things you KNOW happened, but anything that hasn't been confirmed in your frame of reference is fair play. For example when they're in the hospital they assume Sirius is going to be killed by dementors any moment now if he hasn't already been, but they don't KNOW that, they weren't there to see it. Therefore they go back in time and save him and now they KNOW that Sirius was no longer up in that tower when the dementors went for him. Hope that makes sense.
