When I first watched TVD I was a kid fresh off the Twilight train. I HATED that there were any Delena vibes at all. Stefan should be her one true love, right? Rewatching this, I understand the Delena thing. Damon does really care about her. He's not the most stable but then again, we've seen that neither is Stefan. It's an intriguing ship that's for sure...

You will potentially get MASSIVE SPOILERS that could take away some of the effectiveness of what the show is doing. I have seen other reactors not like certain story lines because they knew too much about the spin-offs.

2020-04-08 19:19:44 +0000 UTCOne of the most significant things you learn in this episode is the humanity switch. It is a really important part of this show. It is quite complex. They can turn it off, but they care about absolutely nothing. When they turn it back on, it is a gradual process, letting emotions in slowly. It can take years to get their humanity back after flipping it. It just depends on how long it was turned off for. Damon had only recently flipped his back on when the show started. That was one of the reasons he was so bad at the beginning. Isobel was pretending to have hers flipped to scare everyone. I think her maternal instinct towards Elena prevents her from flipping it completely. I'll not answer the question regarding Elena and Katherine as it has already been explained in previous comments. Up until the moment Isobel stated Damon was in love with Elena, I'm not sure even Damon was fully aware of it. The fact that he has fallen for Elena shows his humanity is on because when it is off, vampires don't feel love. IMO, Isobel is one of the most human vampires on the show because of her maternal instinct, despite giving her up when she was only a young girl. Isobel giving Ric the ring back shows she still loves him. The next episode is brilliant, it's not one of the show's best season finale's but it is still really good. Great reaction, can't wait for the next one. Stay safe, stay healthy.

Isobel mentioned that the family line is what attracted Katherine to locate Isobel and help her with the daylight necklace. Also, it's true that the humans would be useless against Stefan and Damon, but they still have uses. The ring would bring John back to life if a vampire, Isobel, killed him, but it only works against mystical creatures based on what Isobel told Alaric when she gave it to him. If a human killed him or John, the ring wouldn't work, so having humans there would be beneficial for Isobel. Also when she threatened Elena with the human backup, two humans would be more than enough for a high school girl and Isobel was probably told about Stefan's personality and knew he wouldn't go all out and kill a couple of compelled humans and that Stefan would also try to reign in Damon from killing them as well.
