Season 5 is the best in my opinion

It was actually planned to end at season 5 - Kripke planned it that way, hence why he left after season 5, because that's what he planned. Just like JK Rowling and Harry Potter, she knew she wanted 7 books and waited for a publisher to take a chance on them all. Kripke mentioned this way early in the press in early season 5, so I was prepared for it to end whilst watching this the first time!

I think the reason Sam's happiest memories were of the times he ran away is that those were the very rare times where he felt like he had taken control of his own life. Also I love that it's officially CANON that Sam & Dean are soulmates lol

God. I feel for Dean, but as many have mentioned, it really sucks that Sam's memories are met with as silly or looked-down-upon when the reality is most of his good memories tend to be alone, independence, normalcy. I can imagine he has a ton of good memories with Dean as well, but we didn't go through the entire array. Whether they were manipulated by Zachariah or not, that doesn't truly matter as Sam's allowed to have happiness outside of his family-- sometimes, that may have been one of the few places toooo find it. Also, not everyone can leave their Heaven. Ash specifically is a genius and managed to discover a way to jump between barriers, so when he mentioned "soulmates" sharing a heaven... it is kinda implied that Sam and Dean shared. It doesn't mean romance, it is moreso they are tied together in a meaningful manner that transcends death.

I read a comment once that someone said all of Dean’s memories are him making other people happy. Giving Sam a firework show and consoling Mary. I also don’t think all of Sam’s happy memories don’t include Dean, but that just happened to be what being shown to them. This season is amazing, the culmination of 5 seasons working to these final moments. Eric Kripke did a fantastic job.

To answer your question with a question, Steven. You ask how and why Zachariah is able to do all this claiming he doesnt "act like an angel", well, who's going to stop him? God is gone, Michael and Lucifer both want the Winchesters so who is going to stop Zachariah or oppose him? All angels want what's best for heaven, in this case what's best for heaven is using Dean to fight Sam and rid the universe of demons. Lot of stuff at play here.

My interpretation of the episode makes more sense and helps stave off the Sam haters. They're in heaven so why wouldn't Zachariah be manipulating what they're seeing. Doesnt mean they didnt happen but hes most likely cherry picking memories that will hurt Dean and split the boys apart because isnt that the whole point? Drive a wedge between the two so they each can play their role. Zachariah can use an avatar of their mom to piss them off but dont expect him to place the boys in "random" memories they have no control of? Zachariah is behind everything, butthurt he cant close the deal so hes getting desperate and its obvious.

Love Sam, and definitely feel bad for Dean in this episode. His whole life has been to protect Sam. And I do actually love John, but he's the reason why Dean's whole existence has been to protect Sam. John made Sam, Dean's world (and inadvertently caused some, in my opinion, severe codependency issues on Deans behalf) so to find out that basically your whole reason for living (in Dean's eyes) envisions his heaven without you, as a matter of fact, getting away from you (indirectly), that sucks, that blows, but thats not Sam's fault. That's it. End of sentence.🤷🏾‍♀️ I feel like as a fandom sometimes we boohoo for Dean without taking Sam's feelings into account. Sam never wanted this life, he didn't have a good relationship with his father, it's not surprising that he doesn't have the best memories. Now I love this episode, but I agree with a commenter above (Heidi Marcum) that this episode kinda paints Sam in a negative light. I think it's kinda shitty that we fault Sam for not having the same experience as Dean, and for getting away from, in his eyes, a toxic environment, and honestly it most likely was. I do genuinely feel for Dean. I just mostly feel like Sam shouldn't be blamed for having a differing experience😶. But anyway, glad you enjoyed the episode, this season is amazing. See ya next time🤗.

Wow, I was really dreading the comment section because I thought it was just gonna be a bunch of Sam hate. I feel the same as you. I actually love this episode, just because it's so different and reactors normally seem to really like it, but yeah considering this was supposed to be the last season, it sucks that they painted Sam in the light that they did. I do feel for Dean in this episode, genuinely because that must be so painful. I just think the fandom sometimes doesn't take into account how Sam feels and has felt. He didn't want this life. He didn't have a good relationship with his father, and he doesn't have the best memories. I don't think it's fair to be mad with Sam because of that. That was his experience and he's entitled to it.

Yes season 5 is still considered one of the strongest, if not best, of the series; for many reasons, but mostly due to the fact when this season aired it was most likely going to be the last. The show was always on the chopping block ratings wise and the writers aimed to go out on a high note; seasons 1-5 are definitely a high point for the series as a whole. Not to say the rest of the show goes downhill, just in terms of the stories being told, everything was so new and the stakes seemed higher.

While I love season five overall... I'm really hating how this season continues to show Sam in such a negative light. Especially in this episode. I hate how this episode makes Dean look like he's the perfect son and brother, while Sam is the bad son and brother. It's really unfair to Sam's character, especially after all his hard work to try to regain Dean's trust. I love this episode's concept and seeing Ash and Pamela again, but I don't care for this episode much overall.
