Just an insight, i believe there at the end when Pam went all in with the bird funeral, she realized that Michael had internalized this whole Ed Truck incident, and was so upset because he was projecting their nonchalance over Truck's death, as if they were indifferent to his imagined death and his fears of ending up dying alone. And that is why at the end when she was talking about the bird not being alone she was looking directly at Michael (who was moved by that).
