The season finale is actually split into 4 parts (episodes 18 to 21)! I've seen a lot of reactors split up episodes 18-19 and episodes 20-21. Each part is divided for you by a different title, so you'll know when the episode ends.

And yes, we did see Whaletail Island being mentioned back in Book 2 when Team Avatar was searching for Appa. It was also mentioned in Book 1, Episode 2 when Aang was talking about places he wanted to visit before traveling to the North pole.
