Watching it again I noticed something I didnโt see before, Joss put in a bit of a cartoon vibe in the scene. By doing so made the scene have more energy and be substantially more entertaining than if he didn't.

2019-10-31 22:31:46 +0000 UTCIf it were for Joss, the show would still be 4:3. That was his intended filming ratio. This can sometimes seen as the 16:9 reveals props or crew where the 4:3 would not. For example there's going to be a "in case of emergency use stairs" label that comes into view too early. Or someone who's supposedly nude is now wearing a visible flesh-colored slip.

2019-10-31 06:34:57 +0000 UTCI feel like the professors were made more intense than you'd expect to sort of showcase it from Buffy's (a freshman's) perspective. That's how it can feel when you first enter new territory like college and growing up, people treating you more like an adult. Totally lost, the teachers don't coddle you like they did in high school, a different atmosphere, everything is changing, so it can be overwhelming and I think they exaggerated some things to give it that 'this is how it feels man' type tone to the episode. On another note, Xander was especially awesome in this episode, in my opinion.

2019-10-31 05:03:57 +0000 UTCJust a bit of info about the widescreen 16:9 format: The PAL DVD releases of the show are in widescreen starting season 4, so there is an official studio released widescreen version of this show, which is what I presume they are using here. (My DVD's bought in Australia are widescreen) Weirdly enough, apparently the HD *cough* "remaster" *cough" scan didn't use the same widescreen framing as the original PAL DVD's - and remains, to this day, as possibly the worst HD remaster of any major TV show. The sad thing is, the HD does add so much detail and look so much better in many aspects in first few seasons - shame about the colour grading and framing and production crews/lighting in frame.

2019-10-31 04:29:26 +0000 UTCJust a couple notes. In the scene with Giles and Olivia, Giles introduced Buffy to Olivia as his student. He wasn't saying that Olivia was his student. Also, the blue car wasn't Xander's car; he rented the car from his uncle while his uncle's licence was revoked. The car he took was most likely a used car he bought. Great reaction!
