An 8? For this fantastic episode? Honestly I don't see the point in rating episodes right after watching them...

Wow!! These final two episodes of season two are really, really good. I easily rated them both a 10. As for Zero Day... I love the overall storyline, as the Machine has come to be in danger and therefore creates a false number so that Reese and Finch can fight to save it before the virus can destroy it. Again... this episode has a number of twists and turns, none of which I saw coming. I also love that because the Machine is in peril, that it can't send Finch and Reese an actual number for some time, forcing Reese to have to listen in on the police band in hope of being at the crime scene just as the crime takes place, in hope of trying to do all he can to prevent more deaths and stop the killers. And then... Root like always is amazing. I love that she finally reveals herself as a threat to the man behind Northern Lights, as she then goes on to torture him for information that would hopefully lead her to the Machine. And unfortunately, she then kidnaps Finch once more when Reese is off with Shaw trying to stop all that's going on. I also love the big reveal as Root reveals to Finch that she knows all about Zero Day and that the Machine is in danger, as well as what's coming when at midnight... whoever is standing by the correct payphone once the Machine reboots itself, will then receive complete access to it for the next twenty-four hours. By the end, Reese and Shaw are in a race to get to he library first to save Finch, and to stop Root as well as Decima... the true organization behind Northern Lights and Control from receiving all access to the Machine. Brilliant! Thank you again! Until the season two finale...

I think the blue box indicates members of the terrorist hunting group. IIRC her partner had a blue box as well before he died.

Three way calling are three phones sharing a single line. Root first talks, then leaves, Reese then picks up the phone. They perfectly missed each other.

The book where Howard hid the engagement ring is titled "Sense and Sensibility".

Re: your comments when rating the episode -- It's always tough to rate a setup episode before you've seen the payoff (or at least it would be for me). I've seen shows with brilliant setups that nailed it, and others that completely botched it. And I find that I retrospectively consider the setup episodes better or worse based on whether they were paid off to satisfaction. But until you get there, those episodes are all potential and no certainty. I might be excited, intrigued, confused, but I'd hesitate to call them great until I see how well all that setup ends up resolving. Looking forward to the finale tonight!

Finch split the signal so that the machine was talking to both John and Root, I think.
