It's a necessary step in addressing his feelings about Doyle and his worries about protecting his "family." Wesley, OTOH, we're just now explicitly addressing the source of his insecurities, so to give him a big win in the same episode seems too soon, imo. The show has delighted in exploiting the comic genius (particularly physical comedy) of Alexis Denisof, and now they're giving his character more gravitas. I would prefer a slower, more organic development. I mean, that demon hit Wesley with his deepest secrets and shame. Wesley doing what Angel did might feel satisfying, but would it feel earned?

It had great character moments: you get a touch of why Wesley has very little confidence or self-esteem and you get Cordelia finally convincing Angel to open up a little bit. The banter between Wesley and Cordelia is so good, I love it when they tease each other. The demon possession story I thought was very engaging and well done, the twist was well deserved and did not seem contrived to me. The mom I think was so desperate to gain friends and get a sense of normalcy that she was willing to allow anyone she perceived as good to come into her home, her being overly nice makes sense as a result,

2020-02-11 02:52:57 +0000 UTCI really like this episode. It’s a creepy hour of classic horror that starts as an homage to The Exorcist but then twists to something much more terrifying. I appreciate the show remembering Doyle (unlike how everyone forgot about Jesse in BtVS), and it does so effectively with Angel feeling guilt, and with Wesley, who is already plagued by feeling inadequate and feeling like he’s a poor successor to Doyle. “All those hours locked up under the stairs, and you still weren’t good enough. Not good enough for daddy. Not good enough for the Council.” Harry Potter thoughts aside, Wesley’s abusive father locked him under the stairs. Jeez. “Do you know what the most frightening thing in the world is? Nothing. That’s what I found in the boy. No conscience, no fear, no humanity, just a black void.” My heart dropped when he said that. This continues the world-building of AtS, where humans can be more evil than demons, and we're seeing more awareness of the demon world in L.A. than in Sunnydale (that nun was awesome). The minute Cordelia mentioned the animal killings, I thought, “that’s childhood serial killer stuff,” but then I got caught up in the episode. I like the contrast of patriarchs trying to protect their families, but feeling that they’ve failed (Angel and Seth) with patriarchs who completely failed their family (Wesley’s abusive father). It’s a revealing episode for Wesley, and I’m glad that they haven’t forgotten Doyle — hearing his voice was shattering. The good fight, yeah? Oh, and we still see Doyle in the title sequence. He’s in the background for Alexis Denisof’s credit, presumably because they didn’t have the budget to make that change.

2020-02-10 17:23:03 +0000 UTCI love this one. I give it a 9 because for an episodic episode I feel it gives us a lot more than it should. I love the development we get from Wesley. I agree, I wish he had of been the one to defeat the demon but I'm glad we are starting to understand why he has no confidence in himself. It was also heartbreaking to hear Doyles voice again and the twist at the end made it go from a good episode to a great one in my opinion. I think it's also interesting that this show explores that sometimes humans are the real monsters. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

2020-02-08 12:42:51 +0000 UTCWhat makes this episode so frightening is the fact that the "big bad" isn't supernatural. It's just this little boy who is clearly a sociopath. This is an evil you could actually encounter in your own life. Who's to say you didn't unknowingly cross paths with a sociopath this past week. Terrifying, right? As for the mom's behavior: she said herself that she believes the angels are all around. And they've been living with this for some time now. To her, Angel is her guardian angel finally come to save her family. And she is grasping on to him as if he were the last lifeboat on the Titanic. Her desperation has made her clingy.
