Yes of course the whole “shotgun” incident was staged. Gus told Mike he would be reimbursed for the damages to the cars. Couldn’t be clearer. What’s not clear at the moment is the motivation. As for Walt his motivation are a little more complex than need for validation. If you remember he spends the first part of the episode feeling ignored and dismissed by Gus, by Mike and even by Jesse. Even Skyler makes decisions that involve him without consulting him. He finds out through Walt jr that he is supposed to move back in by Tuesday. And the final straw was the Beneke reminder. That’s what was going through his mind, that’s why he was drinking and sulking. So when Hank called Gale a genius,, or was too much. His ego couldn’t take that one last blow.
