This episode had some really well written bits but I think Niffat was trying to fit in too much and so the premise was too wibbly wobbly for it's own good. I was shocked by the sudden departure but not taken by the episode

The Statue of Liberty and that hotel motel whatever was a world the Angel's created... as was said in this episode. New York was feeding the Angel's and giving them more power, more control. Before when an Angel took you it was just to send you to the past... in THIS episode they are so powerful that they can KEEP sending you to the past and make you see yourself JUST before sending you back. Living off your life force over and over and over again. That last Angel I the graveyard was after Rory and Amy broke the vicious cycle and got sent once, luckily together. Yes, Rory could have just ignored the tombstone and gone into the Tardis, but they had to get ride of Amy and Rory some how to make room for new competitions. At least that is what I got outta all this. Maybe its interpreted differently by others, idk. The first time watching this episode I did cry... for the loss of Rory. I think I cried for at least a good long 30 minutes for Rory. He is my 3rd favorite after all. Right behind number 2, Donna. #1... is nextπ and I don't care what anyone else says... the next one IS my absolute favorite in the New Who... deal. Can't wait for the next official episodeπππ I'm assuming your going to do the mini episode "P.S." first... because that would make the most since.

2020-11-18 22:58:01 +0000 UTCWhile I agree the Weeping Angels get diminished the more they've been used, I feel like that's true in most cases whether it's a movie or series when certain ideas or characters are used, they rarely get better/cooler/scarier, and more often get less so regardless of how they're used. The impact for me was mixed but had more to do with characters being used as plot devices rather than in depth characters that don't change on a dime to suit a plot, characters one could connect to, and care about too much. Not that I disliked Amy and Rory, I thought they were awesome in their own right. Just didn't hit me as hard as it did others because I never fully felt that connect with them. Moffat likes to make pretty scenes that hint at depth, but rarely has done the work to make it actually contain that depth to make the payoff happen for me.

2020-11-18 05:05:50 +0000 UTCThe Statue of Liberty as a Weeping Angel makes no sense whatsoever. The entire premise of the Angels is that they're quantum-locked. They can't move when a living thing is looking at them. In the city that never sleeps having THE symbol of the city being an Angel is absurd. It would never be able to move. Besides, the statue is made of copper, no stone. Moffat throws away his own concept just for a gag.

2020-11-17 18:03:22 +0000 UTCThis episode hit me hard because Rory and Amy's departure was so kind of being forshadowed but it was still unexpected, at least for it to happen before the season finale! To answer some of your questions: 1. Rory got sent back to 1930s NY by the baby Angels when getting coffe for Amy and Rory. He gets sent to the hotel by the baby Angels when locked in the basement, they are purposefully trying to get him to that hotel. 2. The hotel is a farm. They keep people there feeding off their time energy. 3. Rory cannot die twice on the same day that would create a time paradox the paradox would destroy the Angels and the "farm". 4. The Angel that got Rory and Amy at the end the Doctor says he is a "survivor" the only surviving Angel from the paradox. He sent Rory and Amy back in time but because of the parodox the hotel no longer existed so Amy and Rory just lived out the rest of their lives in the past. In order for The Doctor to go back and get them he would have to create another paradox and two paradoxes in the same place would just completely destroy the city. 5. The original plan was to just get out of the hotel to the tardis and escape. This was the reason that Amy and Rory would always have to keep running. The Angels would always be after them trying to get Rory back to that room. However, Rory dying twice created such a huge paradox that the hotel and Angels ceased to exist, so when they were sent to the past they didn't have to keep running. Hope that helps! It is confusing at first but the more you watch it the more you understand. Also, I hated the statue of liberty being an Angel and moving thing. It seemed unecessary and could have been a solid 10 for me without it.

2020-11-17 13:43:11 +0000 UTCWhile I enjoyed the Ponds (more so Rory) as companions, their departure didn't really hit me at all because I had such a hard time getting into this episode. Each time the angels get used, they become goofier and more ridiculous, making the overall story feel weaker because of it. On a positive note, while I'd probably say that Season 4 is the best overall season of Dr Who, the latter half of S7 is my personal favorite slice of this show (including the Xmas special right after this episode & the 2 specials at the end of the season). Looking forward to your upcoming viewings.

When Amy and Rory jumped off the roof they made a paradox so the hotel was never created in the first place so all the victims in that hotel were placed in the spot they were originally supposed to be. But as the doctor said, once you read your future, it must happen. It is set in stone, so Rory and Amy had to be sent back in time to...well in a minsode "P.S." it explains a couple of things for them.

2020-11-17 06:18:12 +0000 UTCI think I hated this episode when I first saw it - mostly because I loved the two characters so much. But I think the more I watch it, the more I appreciate it. I still think they could have done more with Rory and Amy in the last season. They could have focused more on their arcs - Rory, from the nebbish "goose egg" to the reluctant action hero, the Last Centurian. And Amy starts off as kind of a flighty and slightly callous thrill seeker and grows into a more mature, resolute, capable and empathetic adult who has crystalized into the best version of herself. They kind of talk about it in "Amy's Choice" - companions tend to leave once they've grown up. I would have liked it also if they just decided to stop traveling and start a family. BTW, each of these episodes were planned as one-offs, so they are specials in a way. They were meant as mini-movies. Anyway, for me, Amy, Rory and Donna were to me the best of the New Who companions and I will miss them.

So when they got sent back in time they could just live their lives in New York in the past fully. My opinion on the ending is if Rory had gone into the tardis straight away nothing would have happened and the episode would have ended fine, I guess that part is up for interpretation tho with the βkeep chasing youβ thing.
