So Rufus was a mechanic, but he knows how to fly the "lifeboat" (time machine) so he becomes the pilot. Lucy is a history professor (you'll learn more about her as the show goes on). Wyatt is Delta Force (basically very well trained elite forces of the us military...think Seal Team but for the army). As for the Hindenburg, it is a german passenger ship that crashed in NJ. It took less than a minute from the time the fire could be seen from the ground until it was completely destroyed on the ground. By not having the Hindenburg crash when landing, the people on board (who should have died) lived which domino effected history. People who were supposed to die are now out in the world interacting with people and having kids that weren't supposed to be born initially. So changing Kate's death isn't a big deal because she still died in the same time frame that she would have so there wasn't a whole lot of impact, but imagine the children who we see die at the beginning. They were meant to die at the age of 10. They now have the chance to live until the age of 100. Imagine what they could do, who they could come in contact with, etc that is going to ripple out over time and make changes that we can't even foresee. So Lucy, Wyatt, and Rufus all remember things as they were, but everyone else in the present day knows history as it has been changed. They will get into this more, but that's why any changes that happen are bad.

The words of the reporter at the beginning of the episode were an accurate recreation of the actual radio broadcast of reporter Herbert Morrison, who witnessed the disaster. The Hindenburg was the biggest airship of the Germans at that time and was used for transatlantic flights (mostly from Germany to Rio de Janeiro, but also to the US). How the disaster actually happened is explained pretty well in this episode. But just fyi, here's what wikipedia has to say about the hindenburg: after opening its 1937 season by completing a single round-trip passage to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in late March, the Hindenburg departed from Frankfurt, Germany, on the evening of May 3, on the first of 10 round trips between Europe and the United States that were scheduled for its second year of commercial service. American Airlines had contracted with the operators of the Hindenburg to shuttle the passengers from Lakehurst to Newark for connections to airplane flights.

2020-11-25 11:32:08 +0000 UTCYes, by the way, the show does incorporate real events into it, and the Hindenburg was a German passenger ship so that's why the Nazi symbol. It was just civilians enjoying a trip though until the tragedy happened. I think this happened just pre-WW2.
