Easily the best TV series in my opinion! This show came full circle; in season 1, episode 1 ends with Reese starring at the surveillance camera for a brief moment then walks off and is mixed with the crowds, which is exactly what Shaw did during the last few minutes of this finale (same corner/sidewalk, same camera, and same music) :D

2021-03-09 06:37:48 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure that John's 'deal' with the machine stems wayyy back to 2x01 (approx. 34:00) when Root originally kidnapped Harold and John said he would stop saving people unless the machine told him how to help Harold.

2021-01-12 03:30:39 +0000 UTCA little hidden gems in the show. 1) Shaw is wearing Root's jacket towards the end. 2) Dashwood is from the book "Sense and Sensibility", where Finch hid his engagement ring. 3) "Return 0" is a code that indicates that the application exited without error, or ran to completion accomplishing its task. A "return" of non-zero would mean an error. 4) (Machine) Root's final message to Shaw about her shape is sort of continuation of her talk during Epi 10 during the gun fight on the street. Its source is from a book named "Flatland", what if everything was a 2D shape. 5)

I think people have explained the things you asked to explain pretty beautifully so I wouldn't add anything to that. Please consider watching Fringe. As it's been pointed out. Also consider watching Westworld. Nolan brothers produced and wrote it. Beautiful concept.

2021-01-10 11:49:14 +0000 UTCOK so the ending. The machine did a recording in Root's voice for its copy as a means of teaching it when it was downloaded back from the satellite. The machine copy was uploaded by Reese before he died to the satellite to fight the copy of Samaritan that escaped the vault when Finch was shot. When Samaritan uploaded the copy to the satellite it also highjacked a missile to destroy the antenna to prevent the machine from getting to the satellite as well which Reese did just in time. Now the machine is operational again and sending numbers to Shaw and to Fusco as well most likely. Also Thornhill, the company that the Machine created hired a sniper to help save Reese and Fusco from the cops. Also the boy from the flashback was actually John Reese. If you remember when Reese was running after Carter died he told Fusco that his father died at the refinery where he worked, now we know that he died saving the lives of several man like a hero and as a parallel to John who also died a hero. So this is the end, one of the most amazing TV show endings ever coupled with shows like Breaking Bad. Also how awesome would have been a spin-off with Shaw and Fusco as polar opposites in personality, saving people one at the time. Especially if that spin-off would have taken a more comedic route similar to shows like Chuck - with some drama put in.

If you recall from Season 3, his dad died in a factory, and the funeral was about how he was a hero trying to save others which ultimately took his life. I don’t know if the old man who died was supposed to be Harold’s father or not though. Would make sense since he was brought up outta nowhere.

The recording was for The Machine to understand what its past was about and who to reach out to for instructions. Thornhill Industries was the company that The Machine created a while back, which was seen when the The Machine hired a bunch of people to type its code, when it was installing new phone boxes to download itself at the end of Season 4, and now when it hired a sniper to save John & Fusco. Samaritan was destroying the antenna to make sure nothing else could be uploaded to the same satellite (so it basically beamed a compressed version of itself into space to be downloaded back later once the virus was contained). The Machine, now knowing how to defeat Samaritan, was able to defeat the version on the satellite and eventually be downloaded back to the subway, which is what all those screens are showing at the end.

It's about the same length, it went through similar struggles that PoI did and was close to getting cancelled, but got one final, shortened season. And it went through this despite, just the same as with Person of Interest, being really deep and well written. It's also another sci fi, but in modern day and somewhat grounded in reality show, so would absolutely be an appropriate replacement if you want something to hit a lot of the same points. I also have a feeling Steven would love pretty much all of the main characters.

Also, I hope you don't mind me saying this one last time: watch Fringe next please its THE perfect continuation from POI. The holy trinity of sci-fi shows where JJ Abrams is involved including POI and Lost!
