The actor where you thought you'd recognized him is Michael Trucco. You know him from Battlestar Galactica. He's the friend (Anders) Starbuck made on Caprica and had to leave behind.

Wade Boggs was playing third base, and we spent the entire game turning to each other and saying "Gus! That's Wade Boggs!!"

This contract was for $12m over the first year, which was an initial $2m then $10m after he gets promoted or traded to another team. The problem was he had a issues with curveballs, and turned out not to be as good as they first thought so no other team wanted him at all. That wouldn't be as much of an issue, but another part of the contract guaranteed he would get promoted or traded within 60 days! The team would have to give $10m to a dud prospect who nobody wanted, who could then walk away because his contract was not fulfilled - not exactly going to go down well with management.
