Honestly - with the exception of the fantastic cold open, I've always thought this was a poor episode. Genuinely unpleasant, and cringeworthy in an unfunny way.

It's hard to imagine him having gotten a Princess Unicorn doll over there and sending it to her if he hadn't had his accident. So is he realising he's been a terrible father by abandoning her by leaving the country by trying to get her that doll or was it just a plot story?
