The term you wanted for adoption was "give up her baby for adoption," nothing all that technical. But you missed the details of Claire's offer -- she wasn't going to get pregnant, she would just provide an egg, that would be fertilized in a lab and then implanted in (as Claire put it) "some surrogate lady" -- a woman they don't know, who does this, carrying and delivering a baby that's not in any way genetically hers.
